I admit, I don't know how GSM handles the BB. But with the CDMA carriers, we don't have an option to stop the data. The BB will actually be in contact with the network pretty much all the time, and it will try even more often if it is getting denied. That much traffic can actually be a negative to the tower that it's registered on and cause it not to be able to handle it's traffic normally. Also, IMHO, if you aren't needing to use the e-mail or other data functions of a BB, then I think you would need to look for a different phone.
all i know is i activated a Blackberry pearl yesterday WITHOUT the bb pack. so at Sprint you can do it, which would also make it a NON CDMA thing. Why would you get a bb fone wout a bb pack is still beyond me. i do know that at sprint they require a 25$ or more data plan to recieve any MIR on any pda type phone. so in a way its cheaper to at least get a data pack at first.
hmm...sounds like the most plausible answer. i still say that it is a selling strategy...and even though GSM carriers dont hold people over the coals about getting the data plan, it is still leveraged...you either get a block or you get the package...9/10 people are gonna get the package bc they dont wanto have the block...and especially when they find out they cant picture message with a block, that always seems to sway things to the package.
actually when you go to the page to view the phones and click on the mail in rebate links there is a link on the pop up page for SERO members so even if you get your data for free SERO members can now receive the MIRs
