Time to revive this thread...........................Germany is off to a great start after beating Costa Rica 4:2 in Munich last night. Team USA stands a chance but the odds are against them. Get all the details over at: http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/schedule.html http://fifaworldcup.yahoo.com/06/en/w/group/index.html The game that I'll be working here in Cologne is the game Portual vs. Angola on Sunday night.
That was a great game, it goes down as the one with the most goals in an opening day World Cup game. Ecuador beat Poland 2-0. Getting up at 5:30 am to watch England vs Paraguay
I'm in the middle of moving and I'm super busy at work, so I haven't had time yet to watch any games... I will though. Italy is going to do quite well, as is Germany. I think USA will surprise a few people but there is no way they will win it all. I think they'll make a decent showing and end up eliminated in the semi-finals.
WOW, what fantastic performance by Trinidad & Tobago against Sweden on their first World Cup appearance. This is a team that supposedly has weak defense. Their Goalie Hislop was absolutley flawless, resulting in a 0-0 final score. Hislop was not even in the initial lineup. Sweden had 6 shots on goal vs. 2 for Trinidad. England beat Paraguay 1-0 in the previous game. Waiting for Argentina vs. Ivory Coast in about 45 mins.
Hey come on soccer fans, where are you all hiding? A completely unexpected victory by Australia over Japan this morning (3:1). Some trivia: This is Australia second appearance in WC after 32 years and their first goal in it. Now they go on to meet Brasil........... Here are my 2 cents from yesterday's games: I very much enjoyed Mexico's 3:1 win over Iran. I was gloating over their second goal in 76' when they scored their 3rd. in 79'...WOW. The Portugal Vs. Angola (1:0) was a very enjoyable game to watch. Some superb passing my both teams although couple of the Angolan players seemed reluctant to pass the ball quickly. I actually missed seeing Portugal's goal in 4th. min though....:O
It's cool that someone here followed the first game which was played here in Cologne. I was 50 feet away from the stadium's rear entrance with my volunteer unit. We had a beamer, digital TV receiver and projector wall set up so we could watch the game from the catering tent. Several ambulances also had their own TV setups activated through laptop TV receivers so all of us just watched the pics on TV and got the sound from the stadium right across the street .
A very dissapointing loss by USA against The Czech Republic (0:3), although not having watched the game it is hard to say how well we played. I am assuming that first goal in 5th. min. was quite demoralizing. Brasil plays Croatia today and I wanted to share with you an E-Mail and pictures I got this morning from a friend in Rio. "This afternoon will be the first Brasil’s game in the world soccer championship. As you can see by the attached pictures, soccer here in Brasil is passion. Everybody here in high expectation to be champions once more. As you know, Brasil is already 5 times champion and is the only one team which have participated of all championships since the world cup creation. Now, let’s go to the 6th championship!! Those are two of my Planning colleagues at work…"
Tony, so you get up at 5:30 to watch the game and probably watched every game since then but you are just going to sit back and let me do all the talking...? Geez c'mon now, let's hear something from you, please! Shores, you started this thread and you are right there, how about some game coverages and opinions. Come on now guys, I need some back up. How about Argentina's 6-0 win over Serbia or what about the fantastic goal this morning by Portugal's Ronaldo for the 2-0 win over Iran. That was a pretty big victory for Portugal, they haven't been in the Round of 16, for what about 20 years?
I have to add that only accredited firefighters are allowed beyond the stadium entrance barriers. Only our guys on the primary engine (I'm assigned to the second engine) are allowed in the stadium so I see the games from outside the stadium. The greatest thing about being right at the stadium here in Cologne for all of the games being played here is watching the game on the projector wall but hearing the roaring, cheering, stomping and singing of the crowd when the game takes an unexpected turn reminds me of the fact that I'm much closer to the action being shown on TV. The atmosphere was quite charged during the Czech Republic-Ghana game today since the 2 goals scored by Ghana came after several close calls which saw the Czech goalie deflect or catch most attempted goal shots. A penalty kick 30 feet in front of the goal in the 67th minute almost yielded a goal for Ghana but the ball bounced off the right goalpost. I was quite impressed by how well the game went for Ghana and was quite pleased that it was yet another quiet day for our fire department stationed at the stadium. We're expecting some tougher work for the next game, Sweden vs England on Tuesday, June 20th. There could be some trouble with English hooligans but it's not expected to reach the problems that the police faced last week in Dortmund when the German SEK (SWAT teams in heavy body armor) teams had to come in to assist the fortified riot police to arrest the 430 fans who caused a fight between the police and fans from both teams (Germany vs Poland). Aside from my Cologne coverage, my thoughts were with Team USA today and upon coming home, I was very pleased to see that they tied with Italy, 1-1. I hope they continue to improve and at least make it to the quarter or semifinals this time around. As for Argentina, I heard that their 6-0 win was the largest goal lead in a game in 28 years. The last time they did this was back in 1978 when they also won the World Cup that year. That's all from me at the moment
Hi Shores, there you are, thanks.... . I watched every moment of the USA Italy game, and like you, was very please with the outcome and hope they make it to the next rounds. Although the US goal was a same-side goal by Italy, the US played extremely well. Also there were 3 red cards in that game......hmm. Please keep chiming in Shores...
The first game today was great. Gahna whooped the Czechs fair and square. The second game was ruined by the ref - fortunately it ended a tie. So nobody is hooligan-angry about how bad it was. The life got sucked out of the game like a deflating ballooon.
Aha another person comes out of hiding.... Just a question, you are talking about the second & the third game....right? The first game was actually Portugal vs. Iran (1:0)
Yep, you're right! I watched some of that game too. Iran has made a respectable showing in both of their games. I wonder if Shores is having a busy night?
I watched most of the game today & was happy the US tied, they needed today's game to keep up their moral & fight. It would have been even nicer if the 2nd goal counted & they would have beat Italy 2-1. As for the Red Cards, I think the Ref is going to have some more problems, he was suspended for last years because of bad calls the year before & think 2 weren't deserved. (just my humble not a big soccer player/fan opinion)
Nope, all was quiet, see my post here: http://forums.wirelessadvisor.com/the-roaming-zone/52981-fire-usar-emergency-workers-thread-4.html
Allrighty, the Germany-Ecuador game starts at 1600 CET. The game of interest after that will be the Group B battle between Sweden and England here in Cologne. We'll see how busy the game and the shift will keep us at the stadium.
