Sutter and Doug Gross, CNN February 10, 2011 10:34 a.m. EST (CNN) -- After years of anticipation, relatively few people waited in line Thursday morning to buy the new Verizon Wireless iPhone 4, according to anecdotal reports. Fifteen minutes before the phone went on sale, eight people were in line at Apple's flagship store in New York, according to CNNMoney. Down the street, about a dozen people waited in line at a Verizon Wireless store. And in Atlanta, Georgia, slightly more than a dozen stood in line outside a Verizon store to get the new phone. One of them, Lena Hill, 22, brought food and blankets at 6:15 a.m., expecting to have to camp out in a line to get the device. There wasn't a line, so Hill just waited in her car. "It's an iPhone. There's so much hype about it," she said. "You just have to get it." In San Francisco, there were no shoppers lined up early Thursday at an Apple store downtown, and only a small line at a nearby Verizon store. By contrast, thousands have lined up for the release of previous Apple products, including the initial launch of the iPhone 4 in June. In the past, many shoppers have even slept outside all night to ensure being among the first to get a new Apple gadget. ............................................................................................................................ "Apple clearly was expecting more of a crowd this morning," CNET wrote on a live blog from New York. "As I mentioned earlier, the Apple staff way out-numbered actual Verizon iPhone 4 customers. I guess we finally have the answer to the question: What will keep people from standing in line for a new iPhone on launch day? It looks like 20-degree temperatures." More:
. Poor Apple, Stevie's only been out a few weeks and Apple is already losing their mojo The smart Verizon customers got a Droid
I know I wouldn't freeze to death to get a new phone. IIRC, when AT&T got the previous iPhones, didn't they bend the rules for upgrades? I think, if you were within a few months of your upgrade date, you were automatically made eligible for an upgrade to the iPhone? Verizon decided not to bend the upgrade rules; the rules got tougher instead. When that happened, full retail pricing became the sole option for some. $700 for a phone is beyond ridiculous. I have no desire for a 3G only iPhone while 4G is being built out and 4G phones are being manufactured. Besides, I am happy with my Droid Incredible
Heh, well I actually did go to a Verizon store at 7 AM this morning. The crowd wasn't what I was expecting but there was a line. I got there just a couple of minutes after opening though and went straight through the door. I got out of the store roughly 30 minutes later at around 7:30. Yes, I could have waited for the 5th version but the iPhone 5 even if Verizon get's it so soon will NOT have 4G. My area doesn't even have 4G yet although it's expected to be here by year end. I was sick of waiting though and with the 5 expected to NOT have 4G and a data cap in place by then whether its 3G or not. I decided to just go ahead and get the current model.

There are plenty of excuses for Verizon's iPhone short lines, for example: - cold weather, - pre-orders, - a slow time of the year for cellphone shopping, But the bottom line is that this one day doesn't really matter because in the long-run Apple and Verizon will be ok.
A friend of mine stopped by VZW store this morning at 10AM to get one for is wife. According to him the salespeople in the store outnumbered customers 10 to 1 (that's right, he was the only one) and they also told him that they sold about 40 since opening.
Apple was smarter to have new phone releases in the summer I passed the Apple Store at 8am and they had police officers and 15 Apple people there, and they outnumbered customers. There were more people there at 5pm, and also the Verizon store. But nothing like the last three summers at all. But don't forget with the 3G and 3GS (I think) there were no pre orders. And available only at Apple and ATT stores. I did online ordering for my iPhone 4 for the first time. That made a big difference. But Verizon made history a week or so ago, by breaking the record held by the Droid release: Analysts estimate the Verizon sold between 250,000 to 1 million iPhone 4's during that on-line pre launch. They were sold out in 17 hours. And those were only current Verizon customers. Then the day before today's store orders, they did another on -line preorder. And today iPhone 4's were being sold at Apple, Verizon, Best Buy, Walmart and again on-line. So Apple may have over estimated the in store purchase...but I think the numbers will look good. Even yesterday for pre ordering, the ship date was already Feb 18th. So they are short of phones already. As Yogi Berri said, "it ain't over 'til it's over". I think over the full year Apple will be slicing single phone sales of any Droid competitor. And in fact, they already did this, around a week ago, according to Verizon. Congrats MoodyDan on your iPhone 4 and welcome to the exclusive club! At least on WA forums. Everywhere else it is pretty popular. Certainly the best phone I ever purchased in build quality and features. The Androids are certainly very similar in OS (with minor pros and cons), but I have no reason to switch...Throw away all my Apple apps, just to buy the same ones on Android? What is the point of that. And in fact some apps are not yet available in Android, so I would be losing features, while they catch up.
Well, maybe it's the fact that you can't do a one year contract, have to pay cod, can't do $15 data, can't keep your Alltel plan, NE2 is gone, etc., etc. It's just not worth it.
1 year contact is correct. You can BTA (but only in a store through netace) You can keep a legacy $15 data plan. You can keep a legacy Alltel plan. If you still have a NE2 credit, you can use it.
I have been denied at 3 different corporat stores bta. I don't know what netace is. All 3 stores said no go on my Alltel plan.
They are wrong. BTA is available (I can't speak for your individual account). Legacy Alltel plans are fine for the iphone, although smartchoice plans require extra work because of how the billing system works.
I'll try again. I just have a basic Alltel Family Choice plan. I should be able to just ad the data pak.
