I heard from a c/s rep that within a short time, month or so, Cingular will allow Family Plans to have individual Caller ID name listings (name and phone #). Right now, only the same primary name but individual #'s shows up on all outgoing calls from that account to landlines. Of course calls to cell phones usually get translated to the stored caller id, if they are in your address book. I guess it will be an option. My family members would find it useful.
I, too, would like this. I'd rather have MY name show when I call a Land Line instead of my wife's. She has said that a name other than the "owner" of the family plan can be associated with the phone number. She should know as she used to be in tele-sales. And NO, i can not and will not offer any help other than that.
I think this will be a very big benefit for people on Family Plans. I know with my Home VoIP, I can change the caller ID to what I want, so it hasn't caused a problem for me here, But others have said something about it.
It would be very nice if they will let the users do this on the My Account side (AKA OLAM). Then no one would need to call it in and go through the hassle and name spelling.
Ya know....I wasn't into this way back when caller ID came out on cell phone service....but why is it that only a phone number is sent to the cell phone....unlike landlines, where name and number are sent. Isn't the cell side just as easy to carry over all information....I guess what I am asking is, doesn't it all come from the same place? Like if my mom calls from her at&t landline (formerly SBC) to a BellSouth landline, all her information is sent.
It'd be interesting to know for sure where the name is being dropped -- the phone, the switch? An I'm also all for being able to have individual Caller IDs for family plans.
Another interesting thing with caller ID -- when I'm calling my friends in Boston from my home line, it shows as California Call/number. If I call them from my cell, it shows as my name/number. Is it because caller ID standrads for name display are different in different states?
Yes, I noticed some states handle this differently. The info that I got from the c/s Rep, I asked in passing last Friday. It seems that they are working on the software to handle this, and he said to expect it within a month or two.
Only the Calling Line ID is sent from the originating carrier. The destination carrier has to subscribe to a database to get more than that. Since cellular carriers do not know the display capabilities of every cellular phone, they only send the number which every phone can display.
Fair enough. Another strange Caller ID thing I noticed today. I have friends in Germany and when they call my home number (they're calling from a landline number), I get the "out of area" for the ID, but if they call my cell, the number gets recognized. Any idea on that discrepancy?
Your landline carrier does not want to subscribe to a German database which links the number to a name. They make it look as if it's someone else's fault by showing "out of area." Try temporarily changing the number stored in your phonebook and see what shows on Caller ID on your wireless phone. I changed one digit in my home phone number. When I called my wireless phone, only the number was displayed as expected. There is no Calling Name Identification transmitted to Cingular Wireless phones in my location.
the solution is to switch to alltel. a simple call and my family members were all changed to show their own names on the display.
I think that would be the best & easiest thing to do, when I got moved to the OLAM billing & put each person's name to their line, the bills come with their name on it for their number. It probably wouldn't be that hard to link the databases for the name, I think.
I should've made it more clear -- my landline carrier doesn't show the number either. If I alter the number in the phonebook on the cell, it'll still display the number, just won't pull the name out of the phonebook.
i would really like to have the individual caller ids too but im not much of a Cingular person so hopefully Sprint will catch on too
There is no calling name identification sent to any mobile phone that I know of. The carrier transmits the number only. It is the phone's job to look up the number in its phonebook to see if there is a name linked to it. It is a simple call to your provider to make it so calls to landlines will show the correct names on family plans. -Jay
Question. Is the Caller ID name something one has to subscribe/activate on their cell phone account? Why I ask is I am the account holder on a 4 member family plan, however, all our cell phone calls to a landline come up a generic "Cellular Call XXX-XXX-XXXX" with only the individual number displayed. Actually, I have only seen one person on a cell phone displayed as their own name and their cell number on our landline CID box. Just inquiring. Thanks.
Cingular has a free Calling Name Block option in OLAM. They were about to display the subscriber's name if I did not choose that. Since the account is in my wife's name through a Premiere account, I did not want her name to show up on calls I make. I would prefer that no name show up when I call from my cellular phone. Once peolpe associate a cellular phone with a name, they will call no other number. I would rather use my anytime minutes on calls I make rather than calls I receive.
