Residents fighting plan for cell tower
    Monday, December 18, 2006

FAIR LAWN -- Residents near the Veterans of Foreign War Hall are banding together to fight a proposed 62-foot cell tower on the organization's property.

A use variance application by Omnipoint Communication, also known as T-Mobile, will be heard before the Board of Adjustment tonight.

The plans call for the cell tower to be hidden inside a 62-foot flagpole outside the Fair Lawn VFW Post 281 at 33-02 Morlot Ave.

The telecommunications company plans to ask the board to grant the application, arguing that it would improve inadequate cell service in the area. Zoning in the residential neighborhood calls for a maximum building height of 30 feet.

But several neighbors call the proposed cell tower an unnecessary eyesore that would drive down property values.

"It's going to be a monster," said Freddy Noy, who lives on Esther Court, behind the VFW Hall.

Noy and a group of neighbors have distributed more than 1,500 fliers in the last few weeks urging residents to speak out against the proposed tower at tonight's meeting.

    These people are Nuts.
Gee a nice 60' vs the average 100' + tower and being a Flag Pole tower at the VFW hall.
Guess a flag pole at the VFW is an ugly sight.

I guess I am getting ticked off at these people, more & more especially when they complain "My coverage isn't that great & I don't know why"

Why does this always happen in Jersey? California is not too bad anymore.

I know the area well, my in laws live near there south of 208. Service needs to be improved - it's marginal at best indoors, especially in the summer.

This must be an alternate location to the previously proposed water tower location. Is that a problem spot for just Sprint and T-Mobile? I have good service there.

You can see the water tower is very close to this new location by clicking on this picture:

Embattled plan for cell tower on Fair Lawn zoners' agenda
    Thursday, March 1, 2007

FAIR LAWN -- The Board of Adjustment will hold a special hearing tonight on an application to erect a cell tower outside the Veterans of Foreign Wars Hall.

Omnipoint Communication, also known as T-Mobile, is asking for a use variance to build the proposed tower, which would be hidden inside a 62-foot flagpole at VFW Post 281 on Morlot Avenue. The telecommunications company plans to ask the board to grant the application, arguing that it would improve inadequate cell service in the area. Zoning in the residential neighborhood calls for a maximum building height of 30 feet.

The application has stirred up controversy in the neighborhood, located a few blocks from Thomas Jefferson Middle School, with residents calling the tower a "monstrous eyesore" that will drive down property values. Parents at the school have also cited potential health risks associated with the towers.

Freddy Noy of Esther Court, whose bedroom sits about 10 feet from the VFW Hall, said residents have organized community meetings and distributed nearly 800 fliers opposing the cell tower.

"We've asked Omnipoint to give us other locations where they've put up cell towers like this proposal and they never responded," Noy said.

"We are going to fight this because it will ruin the neighborhood," he added.

The meeting will be held at 7:30 p.m. in the second-floor courtroom at Borough Hall, 8-01 Fair Lawn Ave. The public will have the opportunity to comment after the hearing.

Like Fire said, these are the same people that complain about not having adequate coverage. Then they expect the carrier to spend millions more than necessary to 'stealth' the site and continue to complain about the cost of service.

Get a clue, people. They should had just allowed an aethestically pleasing (painted) install on the water tank with a shielded (by trees or similar) equipment platform/shelter. Win-Win. Revenue for the city, service for the residents, and no new 60' flag pole (as if the flag pole is a bad thing  ).

I can't believe these people, A Flagpole on the VFW property. How much better could it be to honor our country & the men that fight for our freedom and give people better coverage?

I bet none of these residents have seen an actual flagpole tower & don't understand it's not going to be a problem for looks.

    YOu Are Correct, AND:
According toi the quote in Jones's post:
"..."We've asked Omnipoint to give us other locations where they've put up cell towers like this proposal and they never responded," Noy said....

Poor Pubilc relationson T-Mobl's part ... They could have sent plenty of site flagpole pictures and or addresses ... In this case some neighbors were actually curious & actually asked for this info, & some may have "possibly" decided after seeing some that it would look fine .. but they were never even given the chance ..
Many of these "Nimbys" are not tech/cell nerds & really have never seen , (or realized they have seen), a finished flagpole site ....
Instead, let half the neighborhood believe that a cell "TOWER" is going to be looming overhead & reducing their property values .... Now go pick up the ball you dropped, T-Mobile ....:) :)

The NIMBYs saying they contacted T-Mobile probably called the phone # of the billing department from their T-Mobile bill. It's doubtful the message ever got through to the site acquisition contractor or the zoning attorney for this particular site build.

It just keeps getting worse...and I agree Meat, most of these folks probably have no idea what a flagpole site looks like.

The funny thing is, most people can't even identify the location of the nearest cell site to their own home, because they simply don't notice them. But a 62' flagpole will be a "monstrosity" that will ruin the neighbohood...etc...

Heck they could have given the people this web site to the cell site photos as well. It is ashame they didn't provide these people with that information & Maybe they are thinking proprietory info or security reasons, so photos should have been provided.

I agree none of them probably know 1/2 the sites they pass everyday and are only thinking of the basic tower in their minds

I would bet $100 that photos of a proposed pole were submitted to the township with the zoning application. It is basically required. That package is a public document that can be viewed at the hearing. I can't believe RCR quoted someone spouting off nonsense like that without adding some insightful comments about the facts. They know better.

Yep, providing photos of similar flagpoles to the land owner and the zoning officer is pretty much standard procedure. The NIMBYs probably weren't even calling the right office - assuming they made the request at all.

If they were really interested in seeing photos all they would have to do is a simple google search.
