:highclap: YAY! from RCR News The Federal Aviation Administration today has decided to maintain its current rules regarding the use of wireless devices on planes. Cell Phone use is still forbidden on domestic flights, regardless of FCC decisions. The use of other radio devices is still not allowed either, however the FAA did grant an exception for Wi-Fi on planes equipped with Boeing Connexion. The FCC is still considering lifting the ban on in flight calls and is accepting comments, however if the FAA won't change its position an FCC change is unlikely to have any effect on travelers
What's the deal on int'l calls arriving and leaving the US? Does this "NO" affect int'l flight as well?
I think it is only for domestic flights. Now, I thought the FAA regulation was only for take off and landing, but the FCC applied anytime during flight.
Alright, so they maintained the cell phone ban (yay!) but exempted WiFi (kinda) - so does this mean, the next time I fly to Austin, I can pull out my PSP and play against the guy in 16D?
PSP...I want one of those. Too bad I recently had to buy a replacement ipod for $300! I want my stolen mini back!
The regulations of other countries also come into play when a US plane lands in their territories. Most European countries have the same strict regulations as in the US.
guess we are stuck with Verizon,.69 Cents or 10 cents, min. with a $10.00 fee. For VZW customers. Then again, bet Verizon was for the ban too.
Cell phone use on airplanes would only make an already miserable experience worse. Can imagine some clown using Push-to-Talk on an airplane?
True, but I think if they allow phone use on planes then they should also allow us to taser anybody that uses a phone while in flight. If they thought they had problems with air rage before, it would be a lot worse if inconsiderate people were allowed to use cell phones on planes, whether it be PTT, or a voice call.
People are doing it now (being inpolite) on planes using the air phone. And some ARE also using their cells which work at low altitude. PTT would be really bad!
The FAA should invite a device which drains the cell phone's battery to a point where they can't be used in high altitudes or they should allow airlines to selectively block features such as PTT.
It can be solved very simply by coating the aircraft using shielding material that will obstruct the signals coming from outside.
That may cut off signal leaving the plane but there is another issue, internal interference, that PERHAPS under the right circumstances MAY happen. The newer planes are fly by wire as opposed to a cable and a bell crank with servos to control the flight surfaces as well as power, etc Were an wild extraneous signal get into the wiring; WHO KNOWs. So the FAA's theory goes. You may recall that TDMA ATT phones were draining EASY PASS transponders. SO who knows.
So last month I figured out on a flight that my a900 was able to place a call from 30,000 feet! I dont know what carrier I was roaming on, but that must have been one hell of a powerful cell site! I was able to connect to my voicemail for about 30 seconds! Heres the proof! And oh yeah, ive never bee to North Carolina in my life!
How do you know the plane was flying at 30,000 feet? They are not always at that altitude. Did you disconnect the call or did it drop?
I was flying from West Palm Beach Florida to JFK NY. I was over NC at the time. On jetblue, the tvs at each seat have a channel called livemap. This page displays a map of the region you are currently in, air speed, and altitude. Pretty nifty. The call dropped after about 30 seconds, pretty good if you ask me.
