ok, quick question.... I'm goin to europe for a while and plan on getting service with Vodafone while i'm in England/Ireland (i can change the carrier, I dont mind), i was wondering, if I shell out the moeny for a phone and service etc. (i'll b there long enough to make it worth it) can I keep the phone when i get to america? (i plan on gettin a phone that covers american bands as well) i mean, are all european phones locked? or can i shove in my ATT SIM and turn it on when i get back? -- thanks - Sabre
You can buy both locked (provider subsidized) as well as unlocked phones. If you want to use the phone in Europe and the US, be certain to get a quad band GSM phone. Some manufacturers sell tri bands as world phones - they aren't.
If you get post-paid service your phone should be unlocked(but be sure to ask and make sure), but if you get prepaid service, your phone is definitely locked. So just make sure you get an unlocked quad-band phone...that's a true world phone then and you can for sure use it with AT&T in the U.S. ~Andy
You can get any phone you want and get it unlocked. That's quite cheap in the UK. Ireland (Eire) is considered international for UK companies, so be careful about your plan. And good luck getting on a post-paid plan as a non-resident with no UK bank account. Pre-paid is easy though, and, though the phone will be locked, it's not hard to get it unlocked in the UK or the US.
