I had my Verizon wireless cell phone under a year and finding it hard to afford it at this time. Is there anyway to suspend my service without getting a hefty charge?

They do allow you to suspend your service for $10/month (I think) but it does extend your contract. For instance, if you suspend your service for 3 months, the contract will be extended for an additional 3 months. You will have to call 611 if you want to suspend for this reason...

One alternative is to eat the early termination fee. With the prorated fees, you'd be on the hook for $115 plus current charges. But mathematically speaking, this will be cheaper than paying your current charges for the remaining year.

Have you considered downgrading your service to the lowest possible (affordable) amount? I did this when I got tired of paying monthly fees for a Blackberry. I switched phones and killed the data plan. Look at any add ons you may be paying for like insurance, messaging, or data. Consider canceling and blocking features. If you have a device where a data plan is required, you will have to find another phone that doesn't require a data plan. Also, If you aren't using as minutes as you were before, change your plan to one that includes fewer minutes.

I have the 450 plan and said that it would be $150 to cancel my contract. I have the Verizon Wireless G'zOne Boulder™ Black & Silver and never text message or anything like that. They said that the lowes plan would be 100 minutes and 500 night and weekends. So not sure what I will do. Thanks for the advice.

You have two choices on suspension: with and without billing.

With billing charges regular monthly fees, but the Customer Service Agreement continues to age. W/O billing charges no monthly fees but the CSA stops aging and picks up where it left off once the line is restored.

There are two other things to remember: you can't suspend a line indefinitely. After 90 days it will turn back on. There is also going to be a $15 charge every time the line is suspended.

The best thing you can do is just get rid of Verizon all together. They are going to rip you off anyway you go. I ported my # over to a T-Mobile device and they cancelled use of my "Alltel" phone right after porting the number. However, they still charged me the full month after I was told by 3 customer service reps that I would be given a credit for the time the number was not used. Their customer service it HORRIBLE and they will rip you anyway they know how!!!

I recently had a family member port out of Verizon and ran into the same issue.

Basically, you pay a month in advance with Verizon.

If you port out in the middle of the month, Verizon WILL NOT credit you back for half of the month. Instead, they will "cut off" the service at the end of your billing cycle.. even though you ported out and there is no phone or number that is active.

My family member called me and explained the situation. I got pretty upset about that and after a very heated conversation with a CSR, they finally refunded half of the month.

Between that, the mysterious 1.99 charges for using get it now at 4AM, and the new requirements for phones to have data plans, I can honestly say that I'm thrilled that I'm not on Verizon.

However much you may dislike having to pay a full month when you disconnect early in that month, it is something you agreed to when you signed up. That situation is listed in the Terms & Conditions, on both the Alltel AND VZW sites.

It maybe in the T&C but it's not fair that they won't refund the difference, being you pay in advance. It's just another way for Corporations to rip off customers for money.

As you are entitled to your opinion, the same could be said about T-Mobile and AT&T.

Everyone's experience is different, as I don't share your viewpoint about Verizon, since they have worked well for me.

    To each his own.
