Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0) All of a sudden since last Friday two of my at&t friends are getting multiples of my text messages; not of everyone but randomly. I text with 2 others on at&t, 2 on Verizon, 2 on Sprint, & 1 on TM. This is not happening with anyone else. I don't have the read receipt, have reset our phones & I even got a new SIM card, but nothing helped. Please can someone help me before I lose my two very good friends. lol Thanks Much.
Well, I hate to sound like my mother, but if they were really good friends you wouldn't loose them over this. They know that this isn't intentional. -Jay

Hey misery loves company buddy! I'm sorry to report that I've never had this problem. I don't think I would like this one either Something like that sounds like the system is sending it twice. It doesn't seem like it would be with your phone or sim. Do your friends get them one right after the other? Did you try switching phones to test?
So, I don't get your company in this misery I see. . I agree it is the system, what I am getting from at&t tech support is that for some reason the recipient's phone are not always sending an acknowledgement back and so my phone thinks they never got the message and keeps sending it. This is all behind the scenes of course I am not asking for an acknowledgement & they are not consciously sending one back. This morning one of them got the same message 3 times. I did switch phones, but this is so random that I would have to use the 6131 for 24 -48 hours to prove anything. I am not parting with my Treo for that long and I doubt my SO wants to put up with Treo for that long.
I doubt I could put up with a Treo for that long either! I guess I'm kinda biased as my Dad has a Treo 650 for work and he hates it. -Jay
I've been getting duplicate messages recently on both my Alltel and T-Mobile phone. I don't know why it's happening but it just started recently. I'd maybe get one every two or three months in the past... now I'm getting 10-12 a day. Supposedly, the system can tell they're duplicates and you won't get charged for them but I don't know. It's never been an issue on my T-Mobile account since I have unlimited messaging and I've never been charged for overage with Alltel, so maybe that's true.
Hey watch it now Jay, you are talking about the love of my life. . Seriously your dad has the Palm OS and I have WM6, there really is nothing common between them except the Palm name. My Treo is the same as any other WM device. Thanks Moto, it is good to know that you don't get charged for duplicates, that was the one concern one of my friends had. The other one has unlimited m2m messaging as do I.
Remember that you shouldn't get charged for them... I can't say 100% you won't. You know how it goes. Nothing ever works like it's supposed to.
Charlyee, I am wondering something here since something similar has happened to me recently. Are your friends in area's where 3G is just being turned on and some parts are still Edge? Maybe it's being sent over both and if they are moving between the 2 that's why they are getting duplicate text messages. I have seen it happen once in a while by me if I am in an area that it goes between the 2 and am not sure if this is the reason, but it's a theory. Also does it happen when you are going between the 2 networks with them as well? I believe you said your area has 3G in most of the area if not all of it and for a while so you may not be going between the 2 that often. I agree with Jay too, this is a good test of their friendship, what's a few duplicate text messages between friends. :lmao:
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0) Fire, Thank you, thank you, thank you. I believe that's it. Both of my friends are in areas that 3G is just being deployed & yes they do go in & out of it. Good memory, yes my area is 99% 3G (ofcoure the fact that I mentiion it at every opportunity I get makes it hard to forget ), I do go into E/G once in a while. Now that I think about it, I have downloaded E-Mail while on E/G & then received the same E-Mails when I have gone back to 3G. As for my friends, only time will tell how long before they dump me.
3G has been in my area for about 3 months, my SE is not 3G so I cannot tell one way or the other. What I have noticed though is it leaves EDGE for GPRS at times. But as I said before and in my opinion this problem just started so if it had to do with 3G I would think it would have started when it was first deployed here.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0) Hmm let's see, since that was the only plausible explaination I got so far, I will go along with it until you come up with an equal or better one.
obviously its a glitch in the system...i honestly don't have a answer but i will ask the tower guy when he comes into the store and post what he tells me could be the cause and the solution...
I may have found the answer from another forum. It was posted there that if I don't close out the messaging program after sending out a message then it will not send duplicates. So I have kept my messaging application open all afternoon and so far (knocks on head) no one has complained about any duplicates. I hope it is as simple as that.
Hi Charlyee! Long time, no post, no reply Actually I had the same thing happen this past Monday, but from another person. It happened only once, so I'm not too worried about it. But over the past year, I've seen this a few times. I don't have 3G yet either (still the 6131, which is holding up quite fine). If it happened consistently, then I would be concerned enough to call C/S, but you know that already. Best, viewfly
Yesterday, I had kind of a similar problem, but it really wasn't a "problem" Last year, I signed up for text messages for school closings on WSPA-TV channel 7 (for my college, Spartanburg Community). Yesterday we had a snowstorm in Upstate SC (just 3 inches, but we lost power for 10 hours, lol ) Anyway, it closed many schools in this area I recieved 1 message at around 8 AM yesterday, and then again at 4 PM yesterday. The message that came at 4 PM said *duplicate* and I was wondering if they'd charge me another 15 cents for the same message.
Hi viewfly! Yes, long time. . It seems like the duplicates have stopped, so I hope the solution was that simple. I did talk to CS & in the process got a new SIM card but none of that helped. My 6131 is holding up fine also, my SO uses it on a regular basis now since I dropped Veriozon.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0) That sounds like the source did intentionally send the message out twice. None of my duplicates have been designated as "duplicate". I think in my case the system was not recognizing that the message was sent once. I haven't been charged for the duplicates.
after much testing i have determined that duplicate text messages is a phone related problem.......on Motos it tends to happen if you snap it closed right as the message is sending.....my one friends had the Wing and i got about 40 of the same text message from here throughout the afternoon......my other friends has a RAZR and duplicates from here vary......one day there will be two of everything and then the other day no problems since its the phone resending messages you will get charged for it.......
So you are saying it was operator error all along? I will have to let the person know that I get duplicates from occasionally to make sure they aren't doing the same thing. Thanks for the update Charlyee.
I've been getting more duplicates recently than I used to - but it has seemed to go in spurts for quite some time now. This weekend I got 5 copies one time. (Woohoo!!! for the "at least 3 times as many messages as I need" package!! ) Mine are mostly e-mail alerts, and they all come in at the same time. So at least in my case, I don't think the sender is spastic on the send key, or that my phone isn't sending back the "I got this message" message.
i'm 99.9% positive that its a phone related thing......which means you will get billed for duplicates
Now I am positive this was the problem, yesterday I closed out texting after sending a message and then re-opened and asked the recipient if he got a duplicate & sure enough he did.. Yes it was an operator error but what is interesting is I have always closed out texting application after sending a text. This started only after I upgraded to WM6 & started using Quick Menu to close out applications. I would be curious to know how your texting friend is handling the application when you get the duplicates. If you get a chance to find out, please post. Hey wait a minute, are you saying I am "spastic on the send key"? . I hope it stops for you soon. I have not been charged, although it wouldn't matter since I have unlimited as do the two recipients that were getting the duplicates. Even though it is a phone generated problem, the reason the phone was sending out a duplicate is because the system was not logging in the first one, so in this case the system cannot charge for a message that it did not "see".
oh thats interestig.......if you send texts fast enough the billing system won't notice......WA should sponsor a text-a-thon or something to so how fast we can text to get free texts through....................lol
Wirelessly posted (Treo 750: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE; IEMobile 7.6) UP.Link/6.3.1.17.0) Sorry that's not it. Speed has nothing to do with it. The messages are complete in the system only after the sender's device gets an acknowledgement from the receipient's device. If that acknowledgement does not come then the sender's device will keep sending the same message out until it is acknowledged. The system does not log it as a message until this circle is completed. In my case my closing the application out too soon stopped my Treo from possibly receving the feedback, thus prompting it to send the same message out again automatically. As I mentioned in my post this was only happening with the WM6 & Quick Menu combination.
well that would explain it on the Motos too.......just snapping the phone shut quickly right after hitting Send makes it send again sometimes............but my phone doesnt do doubles automatically..............i've talked to my friends and ive had this V3m for a year and a half and its never done doubles but all my AT&T friends' RAZRs do it............Verizon usually doesnt do it to me either.........but AT&T and T-Mobile and IMMIX
Sure Sure blame it on Microsoft they are use to taking the blame for everything anyhow, even though you are trying to say it is "Partially" operator error I advised my friend about this & sure enough the duplicates stopped when they stopped closing out the texting application like you were doing. Hey I kinda like that "Spastic" saying.
