This is a really dumb question, but what does it mean to have a phone unlocked? I've read a lot of posts where people are talking about getting a phone unlocked, but what in the heck are they talking about?

It means getting the phone to use other carriers than the one it is stuck on. For example, lets say you have a Nokia with T-Mobile, but you want to switch to Cingular who doesn't have that Nokia phone. You want your Nokia, so you get the phone unlocked to use with Cingular. This only applies to phones that work in the specific technology. You can't use a GSM and unlock it to use CDMA.

I get it. Makes sense. I was wondering if there was a way to do that. I wonder what it costs. My sister in-law was asking me about it, but I didn't know. Thanks for the info.

Some places will do it for free because they are cool. Others aren't so cool and they'll charge you. Try looking in the marketplace forum to find someone.
