I gotta question. If this is in the wrong section please move it. I wasn't sure where to put it. Anyway, I know that DSS is Digital Spread Spectrum, FHSS is Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum and DSSS is Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum. My question is is DSS a general term that covers both FHSS and DSSS? For example, DSSS and FHSS are two different types of DSS?
Here is my 2 cents, You are correct ofcourse, FHSS (frequency-hopping spread spectrum) and DSSS (direct-sequence spread spectrum) are the two types of Spread Spectrum signal transmission. The only thing is that it is not usually referred to as DSS (Digital Spread Spectrum) but just Spread Spectrum. I am not sure of the reason though but somehow the acronym DSS is usully used when talking about cordless phones. You probably know this already but I always found this piece of history associated with FHSS pretty untriguing: "The technique was co-invented by actress Hedy Lamarr during World War II, to help direct American torpedoes and prevent them from getting jammed and sent off-course. Since Lamarr didn't use her stage name on the patent, it took years for the story of patent 2,292,387 to surface. It never made her any money. The World War II electronics were primitive. The concept was taken up by engineers in 1957 and became the basic tool for secure military communications. " PS: It's been awhile since I had anything to do with transmission technology so please feel free to correct me, if I am wrong.
