Hello, I have been using Dropbox off and on for some time now. It is a great app for storing, syncing, and sharing your files. I highly recommend it for a simplified place to use your files. Dropbox like other cloud storage services, also has a download link to your computer. My question is, while I have nothing to hide. My thoughts are if your PC or MAC goes in for repair. All your files are not so private anymore. Is there a way to password protect your folder on your PC? I am currently running Windows 8, which is a newly purchased PC, and I have to admit, I really like it.:O And in case you want to give Dropbox a whirl. Go here please, referrals earns me more storage. Thanks And Happy Labor Day everyone! http://db.tt/eGcmHiXG
Agreed. Love to use Dropbox. Great for sharing docs or just having copies of frequently accessed files in the cloud in case I am ever away from my devices (I went to Oregon last week and didn't take any electronic other than my phone) but need to access something.
https://www.dropbox.com/help/140/en This still leaves me a bit puzzled. If I log out of Dropbox, and click on the Dropbox folder on my PC. I can still access the contents of my files. Not to mention the dropbox icon in the taskbar. If I click on that when I am signed out. Then click on the Dropbox.com link, it brings me to the website already signed in. I don't have remember my user name or password enabled, so that is another small issue.
If you log out of the Dropbox "app" all the files stored locally on your machine will be deleted. Not a huge deal unless you like it for offline access and document modification. So in general, you want to stay logged in to the folder on your computer or the local data will be removed (it will remain in the cloud). Not sure what's causing the browser to stay logged in as I have never had that issue. Are you clicking a link to the website from the Dropbox folder on your machine? You Lost me Matt sorry. As you know Dropbox puts a folder on your hard drive. Logged into Dropbox or not, If I open that folder, all my files are accessible. When I log out, nothing in that folder is deleted from my PC. Thanks for checking for me. At any rate, This is for sharing. I keep all my files, music, and photos on an external hard drive. Since I use Amazon MP3, I will go back to their cloud storage as well. It is only to have my photos tucked away somewhere else. If I want to share, I can always save to the hard drive, and email the files. Thanks again.
If the scenario you are considering is when needing repair, one thing you can do is move all your docs off the PC onto a USB drive and then delete the files off your machine. However, one thing I am unsure of, and it is why I stopped using dropbox, is: Does deleting the files on your computer also delete what is in the cloud? I had mixed results when I tried to test that.
In my experience, deleting from the Dropbox folder on the PC should also delete from the cloud. Deleting the source file, outside the Dropbox folder, should have no impact on the file stored in the cloud. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk - now Free
That's correct Matt, I found that out yesterday when I was experimenting. ;-) Unless you don't have a need to sync between several devices. Then another option would be, to not install the desktop app. Sent from my SCH-I200 using Tapatalk 2
I wanted to edit a previous post. To late, so just for an FYI. Maybe it's a Windows thing, but if you delete the folders outside of Dropbox. It also deletes from the cloud. The way I see it. Dropbox will still work for me, and I may stand corrected. I have one PC and my phone, I am not syncing from several devices. And even if you did have several devices, you can still sync within the cloud. You just go the Dropbox website. So I uninstalled Dropbox from my PC. I can still sync, create folders, share etc. between the two, whether from the website, or my device. Have a great day everyone. Sent from my SCH-I200 using Tapatalk 2
Ok, one last question before I drop Dropbox. I can deal with the folder issue, I found a work around by hiding your folders. You can still sync by dragging files on your hard drive to the Dropbox file. What is a bigger concern to me is the desktop taskbar. Now maybe it is a Windows 8 issue. But you have two options on that icon, one is to open your Dropbox folder. And the other is dropbox.com. If I click on the dropbox.com, it does take me to their website. But it even signs me in automatically, call me paranoid. But to me that is a security flaw. I don't want any website that I belong to, to sign me automatically. Is their a setting somewhere, that I am missing, or again a Windows 8 issue? When I go into the help section of Dropbox, you don't see Windows 8, just earlier versions. I am beginning to think Dropbox is not compatible with Windows 8. I really want to like Dropbox. The simple, clean, uncluttered aspect of the app is appealing to use. I tried Sugarsync which was ok, but complicated to use. Not to mention, it kept crashing on my Stellar. Thanks again.
That's ok viewfly, I may delete the account and stick with my external hard drive. I liked Picasa until they decided to force Google + on everyone, now I am wondering what path to choose.
