With release of the Motorola XOOM and the Apple iPad 2 coming soon, what are your thoughts on buying a tablet computer? Here is a poll - Do see yourself buying one?
I've been thinking about an Android tablet. I've thought about adding android to my netbook just to play around with a little bit. Maybe it will be a birthday or christmas gift.
Mark me down for already getting one. Purchased a Nook Color a few weeks ago and I am running 2.2 froyo on it.
Highly doubt it, so I selected no. Too big to carry around for frequent use, to small for my liking for prolonged use.
I marked "Maybe Someday". I would ideally like to get it before I go out of the country later this year, much easier than carrying my laptop around.
I voted "YES, probably within the next few months." I would like to get one before I go on vacation this summer. A tablet is much easier than carrying my laptop with me.
I voted "maybe someday". I can see getting one for a long vacation or if I ever go back to school. And I don't see anything of the sort in the near future. But I could get one tomorrow if I find a awesome deal, or I get the itch to just buy something.
I don't have a great need for one, especially at the $500-$800 price point, contract extra. If there were a $300 (or less), Wi-Fi only, Android tablet, I might get one just to have around the house. It would be nice to read the news and post on forums with a device that's bigger than my phone, but still lighter than my laptop. I don't think it's a replacement for either. The way I look at it, I'm already paying for high speed data on my phone/computer. Why should I pay another monthly contract for a somewhat bigger screen? I like Apple products in general, and the iPad in particular, but $500 is more than I'm willing to spend for it. I am thinking about getting a Galaxy TAB. Not sure that qualifies for your poll, but I would be very interested to hear what folks have to say about it, good or bad.
I seriously doubt I'll buy a tablet. I bought a netbook about a year ago, because I thought it would be useful to have a portable device that's bigger than a phone, but smaller than a laptop. I played with it for about a week after I got it, and then haven't really used it since. I took it on vacation once, and in that case it was nice, because it's lighter and fits in the bag easier than 15" laptop. But otherwise, I have computers at work and home, and if I need to check e-mail or a website quickly when I'm out-and-about then my phone is fine for that. Sometimes it's nice to take a break too, I don't really need a LCD screen pressed against my face 24/7
I thought about the iPad, but since I have a 13" MacBook Pro, it really fulfills my needs and has a lot more storage than any iPad ( 250Gb vs 32 or 64Gb). Plus I would really need a fuller keyboard for the kinds of things I would do. I could see getting one if I didn't have or couldn't afford a laptop...the price points are much lower. My wife went through the same process and right now is not interested. My adult daughter will be getting the iPad 2 when it comes out. So I voted 'maybe' I could see it usefulness, especially on vacations. But I can do everything I want on my iphone, and I am use to the screen size. My one exception? I have a Kindle for reading. It works really well in direct sunlight, in fact the more sun the better. No current tablet will match that performance. But if I got one, it would definitely be an iPad...better to keep within the eco system to make it all run smoothly. Got the Apple TV for Xmas and that is really fun to wirelessly see my iPhone photos on the big screen!
I said "No" too. I have a netbook which I love for traveling - much easier to tote around and to deal with airport security than a full(er) sized laptop, imo. But outside of that, I haven't used it as much as I thought I would. And I really have absolutely no desire for something without a physical keyboard. Touchscreen just doesn't appeal to me in the least.

I've noticed that the people at work who have the 3g version of the iPad have started forgetting their iPhones at their desks. Apparently, the iPhones are getting relegated to phone only duty, primarily, now that they have a 3g iPad. I'll be curious to see how common that becomes with other people
At Apples event yesterday, Steve Jobs stated that they sold 15 million iPads in 2010 (actually 9 months), more than ever tablet PC ever sold. He claims that Apple has >90% of the market shared at this point in time. Generated 9.5 Billion dollars in revenue for Apple, in 9 months. Apple Special Event March 2011 The iPad 2 was announced...same price as current one.
Might be having sooner than I thought. I am looking at the 32 or 64 gb WiFi iPad2, however I need to make sure I can store videos recorded by my camera in HD format can be stored and played back through HDTV, maintaing the formating. I know it has a HDMI adapter but I am not sure that it plays through the TV in HD. Anyone help? Thanks much?
Apple - iPad - View the technical specifications for iPad. states the following: HDMI output for all apps & video playback up to 1080p A number of video formats supported, none seeming to exceed 720p I guess until people get their hands on one and start playing with it, nobody will know for sure.
Good choice Charlyee. I'll be picking up the 64Gb for my kid on the 11th dmapr is correct. That is what the HDMI cable is for. How to you propose to get videos from an external camera into the iPad?
Thanks viewfly, yes getting it into the iPad appears to be a challenge as well but there seems to workarounds. Do you have any suggestions? I am going to wait until I am satisfied that I can do the video, both in and out before getting any one. Since the WiFi only Xoom is now a reality, I will be looking at that as well. It has a built-in HDMI port and I am guessing might be easier to upload from my camera to it. It's a "maybe" to "no" for me. My main focus will to upgrade my phone in a few months. If I do get one, it'll either be the BlackBerry or Android versions.
Maybe this Apple iPad Camera Connection Kit - Apple Store (U.S.) In the Q and A, someone says it works for the flip video camera ...so it probably works for others too. I have the Sony Webbie HD cam
The iPad adapter above will take SD cards or USB forom your camera. Assuming the HD video is in MP4 format, you also can bring it over by an iTunes synch, or email, or with a 'dropbox' application like Dropbox that I use between my laptop and iPhone. I import HD video files for display on my iPhone. Works well. The Apple Store staff are very good at these things. With the HDMI output from the iPad 2...should be no problem outputting. My guess is that I will be able to wirelessly output with Apple TV in the future soon too. Can already do HD photos Sent from my iPhone 4
Thank you viewfly, I need to do some more reserach on this, there seems to be many cameras that are not compatible. So far the way I look at it, the iPad2 has two main advantages: Cheaper Second generation, so bugs have been worked out. The XOOM has the following advantages: Built in HDMI port Buit in SD card slot Stereo speakers iPad2 Unknowns: Ram Memory Camera specs Here is a comparison of Tablet PCs from PC World. - Thanks Gamer PS: The pricing for the XOOM WiFi only version has not been announced yet, so the price may not be an issue eventually.
I would think price differences of $100 make little difference...go for what you plan to use the IPad/tablet form factor for. Don't forget a 1/3 pound lighter and also thinner for the iPad 2, and the 65,000 native iPad apps already finished...this is what makes the device. The other differences seem minor above, but It seems that you want to import digital movies from a camera...and possibly edit those movies? Apple has long been the leader of choice among artists and film buff for its ease of editing digitized movies. iMovies on my Mac (and to a lessor extend on the iPhone) is great to use. And you can export it in many formats (windows too). Just some input from my experience and my Oscar winning relative! Good luck with your choice. Personally, I have no need of either. But I will be buying the iPad2 for another.
The lighter is important, the number of apps is totally irrelevant to me, I am not trying to replace my laptop or my cellphone. The built in HDMI and SD card slot is absolutely very important to me since that would one less thing to carry or lose. I have semi professional grade video editing software that I now use on my desktop at home so yes that feature is of great importance as well. As dmapr mentioned, from the specs - A number of video formats supported, none seeming to exceed 720p, that would be problem. Thanks for all your help. Now we should get back on topic, before JFB fires me.
