Only if within reason and if I was given the opportunity to vote for it. I figure it this way: If a carrier is going to be taxed by the government, they'll either charge us up front in taxes/fees, or they'll raise rate plans to make up for it.
Landlines get taxed. Why not cell phones? No one enjoys taxes, but we do have to pay for the public infrastructure and such.
I'm not sure why this is getting so much attention over the last week or so. I've paid $2 per line to my county as a tax and $0.75 per line to the state for e911 for a couple of years.
I agree that wireless service should be taxed but I don't think that we, as wireless subscribers should pay a higher percentage of taxes than other things which are taxed. I think a $3.50 city tax is insanely high, though. I don't mind paying taxes if I can see what they are used for. Roads, etc. I don't mind paying E911 taxes and surcharges except that the county where I live doesn't even have it deployed yet. What the am I paying for if the police still can't find me via my cell phone if I'm in trouble?
As a New Yorker I know that my $39.99 plan will cost me at least $46 per month. I would not mind if the taxes were on par with my NY sales tax (8.75%) but 15-18% is a bit much. No thank you.
Taxes range from 6-28% depending on where you live. In my area they are about 12%, Since I work in the industry I don't have to pay for the taxes myself. However when I worked for a different carrier I did have to pay for the taxes (nothing else just the taxes...) haven't figured this one out yet.... My only suggestion is to get the issue attention in the local media that's the only way your local County and city administrators will take notice and change the taxes.
My taxes are about 16% in TN. But I think some of that is federal. Our state sales tax is 9.25% right now.
Maybe it's because people are tired of getting taxed to death on everything anymore, and add the cost of fuel & everything else right now, any new taxes the Govt. is looking to add, hurts & people are getting tired of it. Yes we do have to pay our share, but wireless customers are paying more then landline customers for a phone service, I am lucky as I don't pay a county tax, but we pay 90 cents for E911 on each line, throw in the regulatory fees they charge for programs the govt. want's these companies to impliment & it is getting out of control, before cities add taxes to our bills. I just think myself, enough is enough already, there has to be a better way, that Everyone pays there fair share & not just wireless customers.
In Massachusetts, the sales tax is only 5%, but in my part of AZ it's 8.39%. I think adding an extra $3.50 is a bit much. I don't mind paying a little to help the community and improve the quality of life in the area, but like Aaron said... if I'm paying for it, it better benefit me. I don't know if there's E911 in my area but I hope there is seeing as I'm paying for it. And if the county starts taxing my cellular service, I better see some changes.
You're paying $46.00 a month? That's pretty good. My bill ranges from $49.00 to $50.00 and change with the AC $39.99 plan.
My $59.99 AC FS plan comes in around $72 every month. That's about 20% extra in fees, surcharges, and taxes.
Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows CE) Opera 7.60 [en]) I agree with most of the comments I have read so far. I don't mind paying a tax, but the amount seems excessive relative to the bill. I could not imagine paying 15% or 20% on everything I purchased.
I had a customer call with a valid complaint, he had paid his bill late, and was charged a $5 late payment fee. He was charged tax on the late payment fee...he wasn't happy.
I can easily see that happen here. Virginia is phasing out the car tax, and the localities are pissed because they are loosing that funding. Already my Buick is exempt, and I think the last tax bill I got on my truck was under $20. I'm sure the localities are eager to find a new tax to replace the income they got from the car tax. -Jay
Do city's also tax landline service? I have not had a landline in quite some time, so I cannot be sure.
Yes, it looks like it (at least to a certain degree). Here is our latest Sprint Local Service Landline bill (just the taxes of it): Taxes and Surcharges This section includes federal, state, and local taxes and surcharges. For an explanation of the charges appearing in this section call 1-800-938-1172 or visit sprint.com/taxes. Interstate access surcharge 6.50 Federal universal service fund .71 Storm Cost Recovery Charge .85 Telecommunications relay surcharge .15 Emergency 911 surcharge .50 Federal tax .65 Local Comm. Services Tax .45 State Comm. Services Tax .52 Total Taxes and Surcharges $10.33
its getting to where tax is a dirty word. i dont live in a city, but i do pay county tax, state tax, fed tax, 911 tax, and no telling what others, :loony:
Thing with a landline, you are a captive audience, easy to track, since it doesn't go anywhere. As for a cell phone, are they going to start keeping track of where you are so the localities you are in at the time of the call can get their share of use taxes? For over a year, I lived in Ma and kept my NJ #. Who should get the taxes? Where I was physically, or where my cell# was based?
There is no should to it, they are and have been doing it. However sometimes its for the customers benefit. Like local law enforcement having access to GPS, or bringing an issue forward to large Cell phone company Giants, like no service or bad service in the City of New York. Also a not wanting a ugly tower in the middle of town, or by a school.
i live in AZ I live in one town and my number is issued out of another town. I get hit with both cities taxes, county taxes, fed, state, and a few other ones.
They cannot do that to you. You may only be taxed based upon the physical address on your billing statement. I live in AZ, have an AZ address, but have one phone with an Ohio number (for my daughter to call me). Sprint was charging me both Ohio and AZ taxes until I pointed out to them that I live in AZ and AZ only. Now I am only charged taxes and fees based upon my AZ address.
I would leave Tallahassee but I like it too much to leave (its not that crappy); if I left...I'd just go to GA the taxes are lower there as well; I just have to suck it up
Sounds like your tax authority needs to be updated. This can be fixed, by updating your correct coverage address. Sprint has 3 address' for you, physical, coverage and mailing, something is not matching. Call sprint and get it fixed.
