Well it's that time of year when I wish I lived in Arizona or Hawaii... Did you remember to change your clocks before you went to bed? My computer and PDA phones changed their times just fine (after I downloaded the necessary DST updates). Now begins the 8 months of Daylight Saving Time. It seems like more energy was used trying to get computers and related devices to change the time correctly, kind of defeating the purpose of "saving" energy with the earlier switch. I wish the government would leave it alone but...oh, well. November 4th, PLEASE get here quickly!! [I'm not a fan of DST (or Summer) as you can tell ]
I changed all of my clocks at 11:00pm last night. I'm happy to spring ahead, that means summer will be here soon.
Wirelessly posted (Ironwalt's v3c: MOT-GATW_/00.62 UP.Browser/6.2.3.4.c.1.112 (GUI) MMP/2.0) I think i have them all changed. But im sure i will find a few over the next few weeks that i forgot.
I love summer and DST!!! Woohoo!!!! The best part of the year is here and it's longer now. While my computer updated for DST just fine, neither of my "regular" phones did so without a power cycle. I don't get that - my phone used to update just fine way back when on ATTWS service, but the last several DST changes I've had to "fix" it. (Yes, I have auto-update on on both phones.) And since I get the "GSM buzz" when near speakers 2x per hour on the dot, you'd think the time would be in there somewhere.
My wife and I ran around and changed them before we went to bed... the only ones we didn't have to change were the cell phones, computer and the clock in our weather station that pulls a signal from the atomic clock in Denver. My favorite clock to change is the chrome Kit-Kat clock.
I almost wish I worked today. The last few years when I worked on Daylight savings day, coworkers as well as clients would show up late/early he he.
Awe! Come on Mike....you don't like summer in L.A.?? Isn't that the time of year when LA gets nice weather? Oh wait....that's all year long, isn't it? Anyhow....I LOVE this time of year....I can never wait to spring the clock forward. I ABSOLUTELY HATE when it gets dark early.....darkness at 5pm is depressing....I like light until 839-9pm. Not to mention the nice weather around here come summer....and after weeks of sub zero temps and windchills, man are we ready!
I think it is amazing how the change of an arbitrary, artificial creation like a clock, can have such prfound psychological impact. This year the clocks changed 3 weeks earlier, but people here and other places are heralding the end of winter, even though changing the clock has no effect upon the weather. Fascinating!
I've heard of this theory myself, but there is just something about moving the clocks ahead along with the warmer temps and sunshine that make me think of winter being over. Hey, the groundhog didn't see his shadow this year right?
Get this. Since I don't have my SIM card in my iPAQ 6515 normally the clock didn't update. I was using the TomTom GPS navigation on it and I noticed this afternoon that my GPS was tracking me about 100 yards south of my actual position. This was confusing as heck because I was traveling east and every time I came to a cross street the GPS told me to turn on the street to get back to the main road. After about an hour of listening to "After 100 yards turn left, then turn right." I realized the clock was off by an hour. After I reset the clock the GPS was tracking fine again. -Jay
This is an interesting post Jay. When I had Verizon I used their GPS Navigational system all the time but I didn't know that if the clock was off, that the directions would be too. At the risk of me asking a stupid question on here, what does the phones time have to do with the GPS system?
I would imagine that depending on what time it is the satellites are in different positions in the sky, which is why I was 100 yards off until I reset the clock. I am by no means an expert on how the system works.
In my area, Summer means 110+ degree heat. After the hell of last Summer and this weekend's 95 degree weather, I dread what's to come. Yes, we've had good weather this Winter, in fact too good. We are in a drought. I am much more of a Winter person. I don't mind the lesser daylight. I'd much rather bundle up when it's cold than sweat to death when it's hot. Utah is looking more & more like a possibility every day...:browani:
Jay is correct, although I would have thought that being an hour off would have put you much farther than 100 yards off in location. After all, time zones represent an hour on the earth's surface and they are hundreds of miles wide (at US latitudes, of course, not at the North Pole! ). From the GPS article in Wikipedia: There are still things I don't understand about what Jay observed, but knowing the current time at your location is an essential part of the process. SW
Yeah, but that would have put me on another map! Also, if I was say 200 miles west I would not have been receiving signals from those particular satellites at that time. I'm thinking that the GPS software knew something was up, and tried to compensate. That's why I was only 100 yards off.
Nice find Steve. This explains why the time on the phone is so important to adequately send directions to your phone. It is a good thing to know though in case I ever plan on using it in the future.
Given that I'm an IT wonk, I've spent the last several weeks having this stupid issue taint everything I've worked on... so yes, I remembered. I think this was the government's attempt to find a "mini-Y2K", remembering how the Y2K issue gave a shot in the arm to the fledgling "New Economy" back in '98-'99.
I am the same way Mike. Right now we should be in the upper 70's to low 80's, but this week we will be in the mid 90's. If I wasn't scraping by week to week I would be looking to move back to Oregon.
Me too...all except the Oregon part, but only because I've never lived there. I hate the hot. Good thing I live in AZ.
That's exactly what it is. My dad told all of his customers that they would have to manually change the clocks on their equipment, then change them all again in a month when the computers switch on their own. At the drycleaners I have only one computer on the network setup with internet access. I wrote a batch file years ago that is run every time the computers are booted up to query the local server for the time and update the clock settings so all of my computers are synchronized. I told the manager to turn off all of the computers Sat. night and on Mon. morning turn on the local server first and confirm that the time was correct before turning on any other computers. -Jay
I haven't had to manually set any of my Cell phones or Computers... I thought I would have to, because that's all I heard on the news, but it's all done it for me... So far, so good... ~*Ash*~
The equipment my Dad was referring to was UNIX systems that have no network connection to the outside world so they don't know. The worst part is that in UNIX you have to go to a command prompt to set the time. Not like Windows where just a couple of clicks and its done. -Jay
I prefer the UNIX method, actually... I hate anything to do with the mouse, so "date -s 03/11/2007 08:00:00" is better.
Yeah, but on UNIX you have to be an administrator to change the clock, which means most often the person who uses the machine on a daily basis either can't or doesn't know how to do it. That's pretty much all he's doing today is driving around fixing clocks... -Jay
That's true...you are on the hot side of town. I've been watching the weather over there...and yeah, record 90's in LA. AND the fires. My sister in law lives in Anaheim...are the fires in Anaheim? Although, 90's in LA would be just fine for me....not for you! Hey, how's about the Chicago area to retreat to for cooler weather?
