    I'm confused.

I heard somewhere that Alltel and cingular had signed a roaming agreement for each other.

I thought Alltel is a CDMA carrier and Cingular was primarily a GSM carrier.

Will this affect the AMPS and TDMA portion of Cingular?

Is it only Cingular (Orange) or Cingular (Blue) (AT&T)?

If so, this helps me. I can pick up SID 1289 (Bell South Wireless (Now Cingular??) It almost overpowers Appalachian wireless. But it still comes up as roaming (non-flashing indicator)

    Now for the next question

I can only pick it up when I set my phone to Mode A rather than Mode B.

What is the difference from A to B?

Can I expect any improvements in service from this supposed roaming agreement.

Yes they did, the agreement is for the former at&t towers that have tdma and analog. And then Cingular can use Alltel's GSM rural network they have. Mostly from the WW purchase....The agreement whenever it is in place should allow you to roam on those without extra expense.

I think a and b just switches what channels you are on. Markets have an A license and a B license for whatever spectrum there is, 800 and 1900 as of now.....I could be way off though....

Mode A and Mode B settings tell the phone what to do if it cannot find any SID listed in the PRL (roaming list). In that event the phone will default to the A band (SID 1289) or B band (SID 126, SID 1290) depending on that setting. The PRL normally overrules this setting if the phone can find any SID that is listed in the PRL. Since neither SID 1289 or 1290 are in PRL206, you can choose which carrier you will roam on with this setting. Note that A band SIDs are usually odd numbered and B band SIDs are usually even numbered.

The agreement has been signed. Mainly for cingualr to use our GSM overlay and for us to fall back on their AMPS in areas that no digital carrier on CDMA that we have an agreement is located. Also, Cingular does have a few areas where they broadcast CDMA for roaming. Although the agreement was signed, if you use them right now, you would pay roaming. The billing tables have not been updated since the PRL has not changed yet.

Advice, don't force to A or B. It will override the PRL in the phone for AMPS. If you do this, you could pay for roaming. Wait until the PRL allows for those new SIDs. Also, we signed an agreement with Sprint so you will soon be able to roam freely on them when Verizon is not available. It is for both voice and data with Sprint.
