    By Knut Engelmann

NEW YORK, Oct 6 (Reuters) - Deutsche Telekom (DTEGn.DE: Quote, Profile, Research) will spend 2.1 billion euros ($2.7 billion) to roll out a new high-speed mobile communications network in the United States to boost revenue there and compensate for shrinking sales at home.

Europe's largest telecoms group by sales also set ambitious earnings targets for its T-Mobile USA subsidiary, which is already the group's most important growth driver and should help reduce Deutsche Telekom's dependence on Germany.

Deutsche Telekom has already spent some 3.3 billion euros in an auction to buy 120 new U.S. frequencies that will allow it to catch up with rivals and offer advanced wireless services such as high-speed Internet and video across the United States.

That's good, T-Mobile needs to really improve their network coverage to give Cingular a run for their money.

Not necessarily. If you set up a 1900 Mhz PCS network properly you can have coverage just about as good as you have with an 800/850 Mhz network. To have the same amount of coverage though you need many more base stations. 800/850 propagates farther than 1900. And building penetration is more a factor of how close you are to the base station. T-Mobile (and before that VoiceStream's) problem is that they do not have as well established a network. The cellular networks (Verizon/cingular and their predecessors) had a 13 year head start over the PCS networks (1983 vs. 1996.) The legacy networks already had to deal with NIMBY's and such that the newer networks then had to face on their own. DCS networks (similar to our PCS networks) in Europe and Asia know how to set up their networks and they still have next to ubiquitous coverage where they have DCS networks in addition to lower frequency (900 Mhz) networks.

It's funny how that is worded. There was a T-Mo press release about UMTS several weeks ago.

Haha....yeah....now I do. I was just thinking investment in general. They need to improve their network, build out on the licenses they do have. Otherwise they won't stand a chance.

By having excellent urban/highway corridor coverage, which T-Mobile does already have in most places, and providing excellent roaming agreements, unrestricted, in areas they don't cover, sooner or later they will take off. T-Mobile still just has the name of a 'cheap' carrier whose coverage sucks bla bla. I have consistently found T-Mobile's quality to be better than Cingular though in the areas I travel to.

hehe....I like to spice up the mood every once in a while to get moody reactions. We all know that placing enough 1900 towers together, you can get good enough coverage that can beat 850. The fact is however, because that is a more expensive proposition, carriers usually don't do it unless it is financially justifiable. We also know there are areas where 1900 is better than 850, but we also know that's the exception rather than the rule.

What is this "we all know" crud? We all don't know that and that's why it has to be explained to people so they do know. If people keep repeating the mantra that 850 is the best thing since sliced bread people wil believe it if you keep repeating it often enough. It doesn't mean that it has complete truth to it.
