Re: DETAiLED MAP of T-Mobile's NATIVE coverage - including FORMER SUNCOM in Carolinas

Ha, I'm under "best" coverage for SunCom/Tmo (tower is right behind my backyard, along with AT&T)
but anything 2 miles south of my house is no signal, until you hit I-26 in Newberry, 50 miles away!

No T-mo coverage near Chesnee, Pacolet, Jonesville, Union, Buffalo, Chester, Whitmire
or anything else south of me along SC Hwys 9, 18, 105, 150, 211 or US-176.

Boy I'm lucky to be in great SunCom/Tmobile area, but I'm very close to absolutely nothing.
Hopefully T-Mobile improves coverage in the former Suncom Network in these areas.

By the way, Melissa spoke to a T-Mobile rep yesterday about coming down here to the Carolinas with her T-Mobile phone.
And she was told that AT&T roaming will end soon in the Carolinas.

Here's a map of my area, I'm near the red X:

Also T-Mobile should expand into other cities in these areas, suburban cities like:

    Boone / Blowing Rock, NC
    Lake Lure, NC
    Rutherfordton, NC
    Taylorsville, NC
    Eden, NC
    Mount Airy, NC
    Wilkesboro, NC
    Rockingham, NC
    Ahoskie / Murfreesboro, NC
    Hatteras / Outter Banks, NC

    Cehesterfield / Cheraw, SC
    Kershaw, SC
    Honea Path, SC
    Abbeville, SC
    Bamberg / Barnwell, SC
    Hampton, SC
    Lake City / Kingstree, SC

    Morristown, TN
    Knoxville, TN
    Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg, TN
    Seiverville, TN

    Toccoa, GA

    Fancy Gap / Galax, VA

Man, IMO, SunCom was lazy!!! :loony:

Yeah, I was under the impression that T-Mobile was doing a massive network expansion to go along with acquiring Suncom. It almost seems like Suncom was worth more for their licenses and subscribers than for the network they had.

I think the deal with Suncom was that is was the most affordable opening to start getting service in the Carolinas, I expect a lot of effort and resources to be devoted in 09 to network expansion in these areas. Should be interesting to see what happens

They will, but the first step is adding hundreds of towers to provide coverage when the AT&T roaming ends, as noted in a post above. That's been largely completed, although I don't know if they have been turned on yet.

What I like about this coverage viewer is that it tells you signal strength over water too,
go out a few miles into the ocean or at specific points on a lake.

It's about time SunCom gets a street map, but thats only because T-Mobile uses them.
Hope to see one for Alltel soon.

the Carolinas is such a heavily saturated market with all major carriers having good coverage and high speed services.

IMO this is not for TMOB to gain a market share, but to cut roaming ties...thats all.

There are many places around the Carolinas with no SunCom signal, but full AT&T signal.
If T-Mobile ends AT&T roaming, then many people would lose signal for good. :(

Sorry to say but T-Mobile desperately needs to make some major upgrades the SunCom network,
otherwise T-Mobile is not really worth the price and service in the Carolinas.

I hope that doesn't happen. Since Verizon is buying Alltel I'm planning to switch to T-Mobile when they take over the SunCom stores... AT&T roaming would be a necessity in some places unless they build a LOT of towers.

Since Verizon and Alltel's networks here are both mature, I'll stay with what I got.
I do like my phone and the coverage, and it's well worth it.

If I lived in NJ, like I did 4 years ago, then I would've went with Verizon and/or T-Mobile,
but I got my 1st phone about 2 years ago, here,
and Alltel was the best choice for price & value, and still is, but Verizon & AT&T are close behind.

TMOB may rather provide less coverage but cut out costly roaming partners...it sounds silly and i understand what you are saying they have to do to be competitive, but as i said, that may not be their strategy...their strategy may be to just provide basic service for travelers that dont cost them a large sum of money (they have been paying ATT out the you know what for years and years)

If they are all to be in place by September they'd better hurry. I haven't seen a single new SunCom site go up in my area.

They would be T-Mobile sites, and I think they started putting them up even before the acquisition was complete.

They couldn't really be T-Mobile sites since they don't have any spectrum outside of what they bought from SunCom. Regardless though, I haven't seen any new panels going up anywhere from any carrier.

Re: DETAiLED MAP of T-Mobile's NATIVE coverage - including FORMER SUNCOM in Carolinas

Good point about the spectrum. I'm just going by what I heard. Once T-Mobile knew they were acquiring Suncom they got started. They wouldn't have any active sites online before they finished acquiring Suncom licenses of course, but sites don't pop up instantly either.

Where did you hear they would be in place by September?

Edit: I shouldn't have said they were "putting them up" before the acquisition was complete. They wouldn't have built anything before the acquisition, just planning. I'm sure they did a thorough engineering evaluation of the network before the acquisition and started looking at where they would need to install new sites and perform updgrades. When the acquisition was complete in February, they could have had applications and permit requests ready to be submitted. The FCC updated the licenses in April, but that spectrum was basically T-Mobile's back in February.

Of course, we know from T-Mobile's 3G rollout that it doesn't matter when they start on something--it could take forever for them to actually implement it.

I read on another board that SunCom reps have been told early September will be when T-Mobile completes rebranding and starts doing business as T-Mobile in all SunCom Stores.

AT&T has done a lot of building out here and there's just no way T-Mobile could match it in a few months. They have good enough coverage that they don't need to rely on AT&T in cities, but out in the rural areas they'll be doomed if they do away with roaming.

Re: DETAiLED MAP of T-Mobile's NATIVE coverage - including FORMER SUNCOM in Carolinas

The new sites will probably take longer than September then. T-Mobile probably just wants to get their name out there better. Get new signups because of the new name, then later get more signups because of expanded coverage, maybe?

Was the roaming cutoff a firm date, or was that speculation too? Maybe they hope to cut down on roaming with the new sites first as they come online, but not cut off AT&T roaming completely until later?

Otherwise it seems like they're making this a rough transition.

No date on the roaming cutoff; it is just hearsay from a post earlier in this thread.

It was Melissa who talked to a T-Mobile rep in the Charlotte area about 2 weeks ago.
(So my guess was that it was a SunCom rep, that is now part of T-Mobile).

All The rep said was that it would be ending soon......
If I had to guess any time period of what that means I'd say by the end of the year.

They are mostly add-ons to existing cell sites - that's the only way you get that many done in a short period of time.

While I don't think any of T-Mobile's 3G network has HSUPA initially, it's in the plans. I've heard sometime in 09, but I don't recall the details of that right now.

I haven't seen any panels going up on existing towers though. SunCom put up a monopole in late 2006 and never installed panels on it. I haven't been that way in about 2 weeks but at that time there still weren't panels on it, much less on rented space on other towers.
