Oh, those buttons! Those buttons, when pressed begin to transmit data to an organization called "Eschelon". They are a secret, so to speak, entity in England, that was created for the sole purpose of monitoring any and all voice, data, and satellite communications on the planet, and screening them for terrorist code words. Words such as attack, war, bomb, plane, etc, etc. As a matter of fact, within 30 minutes, they will have reviewed this post because it does "trip their switches", due to all the words I used, and Men in Black may very well visit with us Hooligan. Oh, by the way, I wouldn't worry too much about our country, because you could send the Government an actual plan, with details, and they would somehow overlook it and then blame it on another department after the incident, so basically, we are safe...........YEAH, THAT'S WHAT THOSE BUTTONS ARE!! GO AHEAD, PRESS EM!!! :browani:
Well, I did click them and the Universe still seems to intact atleast the little bit I can see out of my window. They seem to be some kind of personal file sharing/blog sites. Interesting.... PS: Steven you are way beyond crazy.......:lmao:
According to our admin they are "ways for people to bookmark (and tag) threads or posts they find useful." Don't worry. They won't trigger a nuclear bomb or anything of the kind.
They are both basiclly bookmark sharing tools. The square button goes to del.icio.us which is probably the better known one. If you click that, it saves the link, then it lets you 'tag' it with keywords and it also makes that bookmark available to other people searching for info on that topic. I figured we would give it a try to see if it helps bring more people to the great info we've built up here. It might also be a plot to destroy the universe though :evillaugh
Okay. That's more benign than my original thought of some sort of Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb-style doomsday weapon. Keep up the good work, JFB. The number of upgrades to the forums in the last 1-2 years is trully amazing.
I was quite sure that it wouldn't impact the whole universe maybe just my laptop.... Thanks Joe, sounds like a nice addition.
del.icio.us and sites like it are based on a couple of simple but powerful ideas. 1) Collectively we know a lot more than any one person knows (obvious, but stick with me). 2) The way we organize knowledge is important. del.icio.us lets people organize knowledge via "tags" - verbal descriptions that make sense to them. 3) If we have thousands of people all tagging stuff that they find interesting, order emerges out of chaos. This is a bit counter-intuitive, but true. It also upends the traditional library function of organizing everything according to a predetermined taxonomy. What emerges from everyone's tags is a "folksonomy" - its organization and emphasis changes according to need and use. As a side comment, this is one answer to the Picasso quote in Charlyee's sig. Picasso was complaining about the fact that computers in his day were programmed primarily to solve narrow problems. If you weren't interested in those particular problems they weren't interesting, end of story. What if you are interested in coming up with new questions, in how the important questions are framed, in how different people look at the world? As we are showing by our participation on WA, the computer as a communication tool is at least as important as its use as a calculation tool. Sites like wikipedia and del.icio.us start to get at some of those philosophical issues that Picasso was hinting at. SW
Steve, I didn't realize you and Picasso discussed computer philosophy over Singapore Slings....... . Just teasing you.. Talking about changes, now I see my signature showing up in every post not just the first one in the page..... Ok Joe, are you messing with our minds? My signature did not show up on this one but it did in the 2 previous ones...
Never had a Singapore Sling with Picasso but I did witness a discussion that he and Einstein had in a Parisian nightclub. Or at least a re-enactment of a supposed discussion. The only time I tried to visit said nightclub it was, unfortunately, closed. Now we are really OT.
Now, why would you call it OT Steve, isn't it random information sharing or order emerging out of chaos that you so well explained that del.icio.us was about....... So has anyone started using either of the sites? PS: Thanks for the links Steve, very interesting reading.
Emergent order depends on large numbers. If you just take my posts, and especially if you get me to free associate on Picasso, drinking, what have you, then you'll still just have chaos. SW
