Over the years I've collected a bunch of logos from wireless carriers that have come and gone. I figured, I'd start posting them for nostalgia sake. Feel free to post any you might have. Remember any of these? I'll start with some that have gone into making T-Mobile.
Predecessor to Cingular, in our area. It used to be called Ameritech Cingular, then Ameritech was dropped. Sent from my iPad Air 2 using Tapatalk
This was Pacific Bell's first venture into wireless. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AirTouch Supposedly, this was AirTouch's predecessor: http://www.trademarkia.com/logo-images/pactel-corporation/pactel-cellular-74361817.jpg
In metro Atlanta there was BellSouth Mobility, a forerunner to Cingular Most of the folks up there miss BellSouth landlines... The new AT&T isn't quite right lol Sent from my SM-N910V
Still rocking their old prepaid plan on Verizon. Just keep it out of nostalgia and long expirations. Sent from my SM-N910V
Wow. The Cellular One SE brand was acquired by Verizon a long time ago. I could say the same about USCellular, but they are still alive, just not in Florida lol Sent from my SM-N910V
Part of cellular one was what became AT&T wireless (prior to Cingular merger) in California. I think GTE was the competing B-carrier that was gobbled up by VZW (Cellular One was A-carrier back in the AMPS days). Oh, and there was Pacific Bell before Cingular…
USCellular is alive and thriving here. They are the best CDMA provider in WI and IA Sent from my iPhone 6 using Tapatalk
They have presence in the Carolinas and Knoxville. In Georgia and most of Florida, it was sold to AT&T. The southeast Florida operations were sold to Alltel. Sent from my SM-N910V
Here in the Northeast, predecessors to Verizon Wireless, were Bell Atlantic Mobile and NYNEX Cellular.
@QLR I won't be dogmatic about it, but I'm thinking that your statement about Verizon "acquiring" Cingular is not quite accurate. Please correct me if I'm wrong, but Cingular, before being rebranded by ATT as ATT Mobility, was wholly owned by the new ATT (formerly SBC). SBC (Southern Bell Corp) was the Texas baby bell that turned around and cannibalized not only its siblings (such as the Pacific Bell in Calif that I worked for), but eventually even murdered it parent (the old ATT out of Atlanta). I think that what happened is that the FCC "realigned markets" and forced the sale of holdings by many carriers over a period of several years. While working for ATT, there were internal notices of such alignments. I knew of one that sent a whole community in an uproar up in Washington State because it forced them all off CDMA and onto (at the time) TDMA. By reason of technology, they were all forced to get new phones. If it was anyone's "fault," it was the FCC's. All finger pointing should go there. However, the intent was not to skew customers. It was to provide a fair and level playing field. I don't know if such alignments are still happening.
@KevinJames, I did not say that at all. Way back in the day, there were several Cellular One brands, operated by different companies, and the one that operated in Georgia (and the Southeast) was acquired by Verizon. In my post regarding BELLSOUTH Mobility, that was indeed taken over by Cingular. Edit: http://www.verizonwireless.com/news/2002/08/pr2002-08-15a.html Sent from my SM-N910V
@KevinJames, I think you misread what @QLR said. He was talking about Cellular One, not Cingular. Speaking of dead and buried carriers, the GTE seems to be defunct indeed, so here it is.
My bad. I'll blame it on old age, bad eyes, and chemo fallout. I saw the Cingular emblem above your post. Indeed you mentioned Cellular One. I'll go crawl back in my hole now.
Here are a couple small carriers... I think PrimeCo was an original PCS carrier in the Wash, DC area and the other is obvious.
What would be "neato peachie keen" would be to create a morphing video of these companies changing from one to the other. But seeing as some were swallowed up by larger companies, went completely defunct, or was just a realignment, I'm not sure how each of those scenarios would be represented. Then there is the added complexity of regional changes that affected the same company in different ways.
PrimeCo was huge. Their service areas included Wisconsin, northern and central Illinois, and northern Indiana; and parts of Virginia and North Carolina, as well as the Gulf Coast from Key West, Florida to Houston, Texas. PrimeCo had the license to operate in Hawaii as well. Iirc their headquarter was later moved to Itasca, iL @palandri, please correct me if I am wrong. Sent from my iPad Air 2 using Tapatalk
A few more old logos: Amica was a very small carrier and BellSouth Mobility DCS was a very early digital service.
Anybody remember this one? Southern New England Telephone. And... Nextel And while Sprint is not defunct as a company, but this logo is defunct:
@boblito - Sussex Cellular; I'm thinking it was simple red on white. I'll dig around to see if I clipped that one. Funny that the #1 result in Google for 'Sussex Cellular' is a lively thread from here involving yourself.
Hi Joe, when I did a Google search, all I found was the FCC filings for the cancellation of Sussex Cellular license, along with some thoughts from Mr. Cline. but no logo. I even looked for SciTel to no avail.
@bobolito - Do you remember what domain they used? We could check http://archive.org/web/web.php with that. sussexcellular.com and scitel.com are not there.
Yes indeed. I started service with PacTel Cellular just as it was spun off from Pacific Telesis and renamed AirTouch Cellular, back in 1994.
