The latest PRL update allows us to use Vision while roaming on Verizon's network!! This finally allows CDMA carriers to compete with GSM with a more standardized roaming experience. Anyone on an older PRL should get the update.
Sprint is being very aggressive allowing more features to their customers. This definitely is a step in the right direction and Sprint and ALLTEL are clearly ahead in national data roaming as both carriers now data roam on different networks with just regular phones, unlike with Verizon, who has data roaming aggreements, but only allows data devices/cards to data roam.
I still disagree with the competition statement, granted this definetly brings CDMA carriers mostly on par with GSM carriers in the states. But this does nothing overseas which is a major draw for the GSM carriers, and I'm sure overseas roaming is a great revenue generator both for the carriers here and overseas.
i thought that Verizon and Alltel pretty much did limitless roaming on eachother no matter wat...........why just AirCards?
Sweet it dose work! I was just using my 700wx on Verizon's network here in Laughlin. I did a speed test, which came back with 107kbps.
Verizon and ALLTEL have a pretty sweat roaming agreement for voice and data, but Verizon will not allow a normal phone to data roam on other carriers. Verizon will only allow DATA cards, like aircards, and PDA data devices to data roam across networks. Don't ask me why.
thats weird.........so you can data roam on PDAs??? i still need to get the new PRL 20225.........then ill be able to data roam on Verizon....yippee!!!!!!
Quite a few people over at SU are reporting data roaming with regular phones too. I believe that it's only 1X, but if I am correct Verizon dosen't have EVDO in Laughlin yet.
Turns out that the release of the new PRL just happened to coincide with the data roaming with Verizon being activated. But it was just a coincidence and no PRL update is necessary. Lots of exciting things happening at Sprint lately.
First off, thanks for the "heads-up" on this. But I cant seem to get Vision to work while roaming. I think I'm on the verizon network (80% sure) while I roam, but not entirely sure Are there menu features on the phone that need setting prior to connecting? I keep getting the message: "Service not available while roaming" I have an SPH-A920 and Vision works fine while on the Sprint network.
Yeah, you wont be able to data roam. The a920 is one of those phones that has it locked out in the firmware. Sorry
Yesterday was the first time it ever worked on my LX-350. It's funny because I had just tried a couple of days before and nothing.
Wirelessly posted (LG-LX350 AU-MIC-LX350/2.0 MMP/2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1) you would think so but no they dont do that.
I believe Verizon actually does have EVDO up in Laughlin. A friend of mine that has Verizon went down that direction and unless I'm mistaken he mentioned having EVDO there. EDIT: Looks like Verizon's coverage maps show EVDO for Laughlin as well...
that sux....well i got a Motorola RAZR (Red) and i just updated my PRL to 20225 today........so i tested out Verizon roaming and it works.....im excited.....well too bad for all of those other ppls...........what about regular Vision PRLs....are they gonna make one for the non Power Vision phones.......cuz i know that on my moms phone it comes up with a messgae saying that the sign on ID and password from the Vision profile couldnt log her in..........will she need a PRL update to take advantage of this?.........cuz i know her Samsung can do data while roaming
A PRL update is not required for data roaming on Verizon. It just so happened that the new PRL came out on the same day.
Ok so if I get a phone that doesn't have data roaming locked out in the firmware I can use it? I currently use the Phone-As-Modem tether on my A900 which doesn't allow for data roaming, I was looking at getting the new Novatel U720 USB Modem for this purpose, however I already have three lines of service that I pay for and really can't afford another. My other option was getting a BlackBerry/Treo device, but I like using the Power Vision services (Sprint TV/Radio) on my handset and the Treo is a tad expensive to replace a phone at full price, although having a Treo 700P would rock. Is the new MOTO RAZR or KRZR locked down for data roaming? Is it just the Samsungs that are or ...? -Charlie
yeah i got the new red razr and it isnt locked out.....although there is another thread tha says even if you have a data package.......you may still get charged standard data rates as if you didnt have a package at all
