its where you use your phone as a modem for your laptop or any computer for that matter......they call it tethering because you are tethering your phone to your computer. Officially it's called "phone-as-modem". It's very handy but it uses a lot more data than your phone would use by itself so many carriers charge upwards of $40 just to add on tethering

Thether is just a way to use the internet by hooking your phone up to your computer. Your phone works as your way to access the internet pretty much. If you are running the 1x rtt then it is just a little bit faster (not much) than dial up, and if you are running EVDO then that will be faster for you. Hopefully this helps, and hopefully I didnt forget anything :)

I have an update. The more I thought about being charged for something I wasn't aware of, the less I began to agree with paying the bill for data useage. This time, when I called verizon, I was able to talk to somebody that could help. It was Amazing! The rep said they could do a rerate and would credit the full amount of data useage to future bills. The rep also said that he had the notes from when we changed plans, and found no indication of the charges being explained to me. I have a much better opinion of verizon now. I also put a block on all data useage. The useage was for mobile web access time. I appreciate all the responses and am glad I found this site. Thank You!
