Hello, First Post. We have a family plan with Verizon, with three phones, one of which belongs to our daughter. Somehow, she has amassed 155 MB of data at a charge of 1.99 per MB. Can someone give me some idea of how this is happening? She plays games on her phone which she says are free. Are we being charged for airtime, or for storage of games to be resumed later? We are both confused as to what the charges are for. I would like to have some idea of how this is happening before I talk to Verizon. Thank You.
its probably for browsing the web. usually games are free but it depends if they use web somehow or if they are web based, im not familiar with phones having this capability but maybe im not up to speed on newer games. generally though data is from browsing the web, downloading things, etc etc. more than likely you are going to have to fork over as they will say the charges are "valid" but if you offer to put unlim. internet on there, or tell them that it was your young child who "didnt know better" and that you want it blocked, sometimes those sort of things will help you get some credits. let us know how it turns out.
Thanks for the reply. I'm also thinking I'll have to pay, but I wanted some background before I call Verizon.
Because you are on the new Nationwide plan, if your daughter is accessing anything on Get It Now or even the internet, you are being charged as MB access, unlike with the old America's Choice plans where it only used airtime. This was a fairly recent change. Yeah, it sucks, but it's how they do it now. I'd recommend requesting a data block to keep this from happening again.
Yes, and that is exactly how it was explained to me, with a "be sure and read the fine print" addendum on your service plan. Thanks for all your replies.
Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry Pearl: SCH-U540/1.0 NetFront/3.0.22.2.5 (GUI) MMP/2.0) You can also in to the Verizon Wireless Web site yourself and put a data block on a line.
did you ever figure out where all the data was coming from.....was it a game or was your daughter really on the web?
well what Game would need data.....i can understand some of the News applications or Fantasy Football teams or whatever....but whats Games?
The data was from games that she had been playing for free previous to switching from the America's choice plan to the nationwide plan. We were told the switch had to be made, when we added another phone to our plan. I did ask if there would be any changes that occur if we switched. The reply I got is that everything would remain the same, including the price. I must say I have been happy with Verizon, but this is the second time that claims made by reps have been less than complete and somewhat misleading. Has anybody disputed claims like this and gotten reults?
hmmmm... I just added a line last week at a store to my existing plan and I still have AC2. I was anticipating a switch but it didnt happen. According to he website, any plan changes done online like adding lines or changing minutes will force a change. I know definitely that switching minutes will force a change to the Nationwide plans... when I change plans next week, data blocks will go into effect on my secondary lines.
The change was done at a verizon store. I was told I had no choice. I just got done fighting with verizon for almost two months to obtain a phone replacement on the "new every two" program because we had added an additional phone. The rep wanted to put the new phone as the primary number, and when I asked if that would change anything, the reply was "No". Since the new phone was added as the primary number, verizon stated that the "new every two" upgrade could not be implemented, because the phone eligible for the upgrade was no longer the primary number. I did get them to reinstate the old primary number and provide an upgrade, but I would have rather gone to a dentist after it was all said and done. The down side is that there are very few cell phone choices in our area (rural Montana), and Verizon has the best coverage.
Whether games use data or not is irrelevant. On the new Nationwide plans, ANY kind of web access is charged at a data rate of 1MB=$1.99. It's how they do it now. With the old America's Choice plans, web access, even through the GIN portal, just took away from airtime.
The funny part is the rep mumbled Nationwide... I guess that he thought that the plan change went thru :lmao: It will probably be pointless for me because I will likely change my minutes when I upgrade my phone next week LOL
It's not about any game using web access, it's about using web access to BUY the game. In order to buy games on VZ's phones, you need to access their Get-It-Now application. Accessing GIN now uses data on the new plan, not airtime as before.
There are some games that allow you to compete against other players... and that will use data. Also some games allow you to compare your score against others. Some games have updates as well.
Thanks for clarifying this Quint. I've never bought or used any games from GIN, so I wasn't aware that this could be the case.
I only bought 2 games from GIN, PacMan and Solitare. While the PacMan used no other data besides downloading, the Solitare game uses TXT messages if I invite someone to compete against me. I have browsed some of the GIN games when I had my Samsung, and it seems like some of the more expensive games have some capabilities like head to head competition. But this is a possibility, nevertheless... Also, these games were marked as Airtime required for use...
thats what I think was the issue with the OPs daughter.....i'm curious as to what she was playing so we can confirm that it really is simple gameusage
At this point, the OP has his answer, so there's no real use to absolutely understanding what the charges were actually from. Verizon bills web usage this way and there isn't much more to it.
See if they will back date a premium plan, with unlimited data. Keep it for a month and then cancel it. Might work??
a friend of mine tethers his phone and is on an old AC plan. Nights and weekends he browses for free...its crazy.
