If you to Newegg they have numerous dash cams starting at about $40 with reviews.

If you are going to use your phone, I have no idea why someone would need an application for it.

Didn't quite follow your reasoning. The reason why there is a dashcam app is so people can use their phones for that purpose. I don't want yet another unnecessary piece of hardware on the dash, along with my phone which I already use for GPS, etc.

My point was is all you have to do to use your phone as a dash cam is turn on the camera and start recording. Why would an application be needed for that?

@palandri: Oh! Every so often I can be dense. The app offers other features typically found in dashcams such as setting the amount of time before it starts recording the next file. This allows selectively keeping only necessary segments without having to keep one huge file. With GPS turned on, it displays car speed. Other features. (I actually haven't driven long enough to see if it records over itself of just saves the file and makes a new one.)
