Danger and its collaborators were awarded for the design of the hiptop(TM) communicator -- an innovative wireless communications device that is marketed to consumers as the T-Mobile Sidekick. Danger led the design team that included Lunar Design, Meyerhoffer Design and Function Engineering. Honorees for "Industrial Designer of the Year" were Matias Duarte and Joseph Palmer from Danger, and Andy Johnston from Function Engineering. Danger's competition in the industrial design category was tough, and included Apple for the iMac, General Motors for the Hy-Wire and AUTOnamy concept car, Sony for the Vaio and Muji for the Muji CD player. "Danger's hiptop represents a new generation of wireless devices," said Chris Anderson, editor in chief of Wired magazine. "Every month we see incrementally better smart phones, multifunction communication gadgets, and combo PDAs. But the hiptop offers several functions with grace and ease of use." Each year, the Wired Rave Awards are held to celebrate and honor innovation and the individuals who are transforming commerce and culture. The Industrial Designer of the Year Award is given to visionaries who exhibit the vision to produce work that is a significant leap forward in the evolution of commerce and culture in their respective fields. In order to identify these innovators Wired assembled an esteemed international jury of visionaries who, along with the editors of Wired, form the Brain Trust for the Wired Rave Awards. Members of the jury for the Industrial Designer Award included representatives from the Museum of Modern Art, IDEO, Art Center College of Design, General Motors, Aston Martin, Giovannoni Design, and Chrysler Design Awards. Danger's hiptop communicator is a uniquely designed all-in-one device with a roomy QWERTY keyboard that seamlessly connects to wireless networks and enables Web surfing, AOL Instant Messaging, full email functionality (allowing users to view Word, PDF and JPEG attachments), SMS, PDA functionality (calendar, address book, to do, notes, etc.), digital games, mobile snapshots, and also serves as a fully featured mobile phone. <snip>
