Current VS/T-Mobile customers, have you upgraded to T68(i)?

I've been a VS/T-Mobile customer for just over a year now. When I noticed the T68 a few months ago, I began looking at purchasing options. First I call VS to see if they offer it--no dice. At that time, I wasn't "eligible" for a handset upgrade (looks like you have to hit your 1yr anniversary before you can upgrade thru them). Argh, so then I began watching eBay auctions....until I finally see the T68 on VS website! So I run down to my local retail store, only to find out that they sell it TO NEW CUSTOMERS only. I would need to call customer care to see about pricing/availability for myself, a current customer. But I've still not been a member for a year, so technically I'm not eligible for an upgrade. At any rate, so I call back the other day (finally hit my 1yr anniversary) and ask the guy if I can get the T68. He talks with the "handset upgrade department," and comes back and tells me it's not available. Great....looks like I missed the very small window when they were offering this phone.

I'm just curious to know if anyone successfully upgraded to the T68 through VS's "upgrade department." I realize I can go out and buy this phone on eBay for $200-300, and actually for $50 (after rebates) on Amazon.com if I cancel my existing service and sign on as a "new" customer. :) However, I was hoping I could get this phone from VS for much less $$ (than eBay) and without the hassel (of signing up as a new customer). Thoughts? I've been really pleased with VS/T-mobile service in my area (Memphis, TN), so I really don't feel the need to find another carrier. I just want a damn T68! Thanks

Right, VS/T-Mobile did not offer these for very long, and only in certain markets. From what I understand, they will be offering the T68i nationwide within the next couple of weeks. I heard Thursday, but I'm not sure about that. On Amazon.Com, they have them for $50 after rebates, so I imagine you should be able to get a good deal (<$150) on it with a new contract.

Ah ha...I see, that makes sense. I went into a retail store just the other day and the salesperson said that they were going to be discontinuing the T68.....I guess making room for the T68i? This Amazon deal is QUITE tempting, but I'm just not sure if it's worth the hassle. I need to figure out how much I'm going to end up paying TOTAL to cancel and then re-activate....besides the $30 activation fee, what else is there for new customers? Thanks

The T68 is a discontinued model in general, so as soon as TM had sold out of them, they're gone. The T68i replaces the model, but is really not that different. Software upgrade, mostly. Also, the T68 was just Ericsson, the T68i is Sony/Ericsson. I'm not sure if they changed the manufacturing, but some people have commented that the T68i is a little flimsier than the T68.

Waiting a while might not be a bad idea. Two reasons:

    1) There are some compelling phones coming out that you might want to compare it to. I am looking forward to the Motorola T720 and the Nokia 7210. I think both will be available on T-Mobile.

    2) The T68i will be EVERYWHERE soon. It's going to be the next Nokia 82x0 series. That means it will be cheap, cheap cheap!

Can't help you on the cancelling/reactivating thing. They might not let you do it for a month or two. ATT told me when I cancelled with them that if I wanted to reactivate, it could take 30-90 days.
