how much work ya think it'll take to convert a startac into a microtac?
well, the more i look at it, the more its possible.

why would i do this? cause my startac based phone keeps falling out of my hands cause its top heavy with its flip mounted battery and the keys on the bottom are kinda hard to press without droping the phone. and i miss my microtac. heres a little preview

plans are to mod the microtac keyboard to connect to the startac, and solder on the mic and earpiece to a 2.5mm headset jack. a large batterypack and a bigger antenae will be added too. the batteries are 3 3.6v lithium ion cells from an old laptop battery, wich will more than triple the battery life of the original battery!

i haven't modified the startac yet cause its my only active phone, but i have started on the microtac. first was fixing the cracked case and broken hidge with some jbweld an a paper clip. next will be hacking up the old battery to install the new cells and rewiring the keyboard and soldering the speaker/mic to an old 2.5mm jack. no soldering will be done to the startac board so incase it dont work out, i can put the startac back together. mabey i'll get another startac to mess with, anyone got one they wana part with(just need motherboard and lcd.)

this will either be realy cool, or be realy retarded. whats ur guys thoughts on this?

Can you hook the StarTac display to the CRT monitor you have there? That would be really cool (or really retarted :p)

well, today i started working on the microtac keypad, basicly mapping were all the pins on the connector are, and marking off the unused ones, such as speaker/mic/vol knob. also testing out the 3.6v lith batt pack, rigged it to an old tdma nokia to charge it. so far so good. now i gota find a 2.5mm jack next

a 650e case might work better, but i'll have to make a custom keypad, so im wondering how i would make one. the 650e keypad has the led display soldered on the keyboard, while the 550 display is on the mother board. i might be getting a few startac/timeports of ebay soon, one will be given to my dad so he has a backup prepaid phone.

That would be cool! Definately obtain a startac or two for mock-ups, and R&D. I bought four more dirt cheap yesterday to have something to play and experiment with. Sometimes they can be sourced very cheaply.
