T-Mobile was pretty average. Coverage was weak at Universal Studios, but fine at Universal Islands of Adventure. Coverage was really weak inside any building at the Citywalk; I even dropped a call outside at the Citywalk with 4 bars. Exact same coverage patterns at Disney's Magic Kingdom as with Verizon and Sprint (ie strong at Tomorrowland, weaker outward from there). Coverage was great elsewhere, I-4, I-Drive, etc. I saw a couple of microcells in the Universal Studio's park, obviously not T-Mobile. Perhaps Cingular, because if I had no service, Cingular did. My friend lives down there and is pretty happy with Verizon, and says no carrier works in his apartment except sometimes people with Cingular.
I am surprised that T-Mobile does not have too good of coverage around a major tourist attraction. Are you down in Orlando right now Airb? How do you like the weather in Florida compared to up north's weather?
I was happy with VZW when I was there last year. The signal was a little weak, not quite what I'm used to here in the Minneapolis area, but still worked everywhere, except for a few areas out at the Kennedy space center.
what is a microcell, anyone got a pic? are they miniature towers, or are they like the panels u see mounted to the roofs of hotels?
Rollindown; A microcell is a mini BTS (base station) which normally has 1-2 radios in it. A BTS is the cell site equipment. They mainly mount them on light or utility poles.
Wasn't the old AT&T, before the merger with Cingular, the sole exclusive cellular provider at Disney World?
I think so. I heard T-Mobile was allowed towers on property a few years ago though. However, TM's coverage was not any better than Sprint's at the park anyway. T-Mobile worked at the All Star Resorts inside...Sprint was pretty dead even outside there. T-Mobile was pretty weak inside almost any big building, as was all the PCS carriers it seemed. I noticed Verizon/Sprint users having dead phones in a bunch of the Universal buildings too. Yes, the weather was wonderful the entire time 15-19. I might move down there after this summer, we'll see.
Didn't Disney let Nextel onto the property around the same time so that they could outfit crew members with Nextel Direct Connect phones? Last time I was down that way, VZW roamed on Sprint and Cingular Blue AMPS. (I used Sprint PCS once outside the Tower of Terror and AMPS once inside the queue for Pirates of the Caribbean.) I suppose that's probably not true anymore.
I know Disney does use Nextel, so that would be a good assumption. They need some CDMA on those panels then. Verizon used Sprint and AMPS when I had them back in 03 as well. I don't think Sprint is probably in the SID anymore.
I think you meant to say that the Sprint SID is probably no longer in the PRL. And it actually looks like Verizon still has Sprint in the PRL for Orlando: 05116 PCS FRM Sprint PCS SCAN 325D 350D 375D 725E 750E 775E 825F 850F 875F MTA013D Tampa, FL BTA107A Daytona Beach, FL BTA239C Lakeland-Winter Haven, FL BTA289C Melbourne-Titusville, FL BTA336A Orlando, FL BTA336C Orlando, FL BTA408A Sarasota-Bradenton, FL BTA440A Tampa-St. Petersburg-Clearwater, FL
I believe I read something where Sprint had an agreement to put up towers in Disney a few years ago, when AT&T was falling out of favor with Disney & this was prior to the ESPN & Disney MVNO's they were in the works of setting up.
