I live in southern NY but travel to PA. I am looking for the best service that covers the area from about Monroe,NY to Lake Wallenpaupac,PA. Mostly concerned with service while on I84(PA) but want good service on Rt. 17 (NY) also. Anyone traveled that route that can tell me who has better service, verizon or cingular? Currently have Nextel and they arent all bad, but phone is outdated and want to upgrade, so was considering changing carriers.
Verizon coverage at Lake Wallenpaupac is an extended area for America's Choice as shown by entering zip 18428 in the coverage map shown: http://www.verizonwireless.com:80/b2c/CoverageLocatorController?requesttype=newsearch Verizon coverage is solid around Monroe, NY, as shown by entering sip 10949 on the coverage map The best I could come up with for Cingular is the coverage map: http://onlinestorez.cingular.com/ce.../pop_mapfinder.jsp?zip=18428&mapt=regionalMap for both areas, not defined well enough in either area. You be the judge which service covers better. Lena
Dobson covers Monroe, NY and I-84 not Cingular. Cingular users just roams on them. But PA is Cingular coverage which has better coverage than Nextel. https://www.celloneusa.com/ECellPortal/ECell.portal
The I-84 / Rt 6 roads are covered by CellularOne of NEPA. http://www.cellularonenepa.com/coverage_maps.html
I could argue that I've been to Jonestown, PA Macungie, PA (bear Creek Ski Resort) and Jim thorpe,PA and a State park near by and In most of those areas coverage was pretty shaky.
Here is a better mapping tool for Cingular then the canned maps... http://onlinecare.cingular.com/coverageviewer/
In my experience, Verizon (through roaming partner) in that region is pretty weak. One of the worst areas for my Verizon coverage that I visit. There were gaps and I was on analog in the Wallenpaupack and surrounding area when I did have coverage. Nextel is the only company that I know of that has agressively expanded/improved its coverage in that region with many new sites including at Hawley (Wallenpaupack), Matamoras, Forest City, Woodloch Resort and dozens more in the WB/Scranton and Pocono-Endless Mtn areas. T-Mobile is doing some building in the area too.
I know that this is no longer true - especially at Wallenpaupack and troughout the mountainous areas of NE PA. I really can't say for sure which is better along the length of I-84. But Nextel is, and has been investing more heavily in new sites than any one else in this area - by far. Another 5-10 new sites will turn on just in the next month or so in NE PA.
I drove I-84 about 2 months ago from Rte 17 (was force to Turn Back on Rte 17 due to Flooding) all the way to I-81 North then to Buffalo, NY There's Cingular Coverage all the way. It just don't Display Dobson on Route 17, I-84 is fully Covered by Cing, there's a Dead spot in rte 17 and Holton brook rd, NY. (Which Shows on the Personal Coverage Map)
My Alltel phone picked up a PCS Sid through that area. I assume it was Sprint sid 4162. It was the only spot I picked up a PCS frequency on the 950 mile trip from NC to New Hampshire. Doesn't Verizon roam of Sprint? Is Sprint a higher priority in the Vzw PRL then CellOne? Isn't it safe to say if Nextel has the area covered well, that Sprint will soon have the area covered well as they add CDMA to Nextel sites?
4162 is the Sprint ID for NYC/NJ & is Not part of VZW roaming. It used to be about 4 years ago, but was removed from all PRLS since then.
Just wanting to clarify djjim was referring to Alltel's PRL. They're generally not near as bad at removing Sprint SIDs as Verizon is. So good point MeatChicken, I can see how this SID might not be available to VZW users.
The Sprint network is run by an affiliate called Horzon in that area. I don't know exactly where the borders of the territory are, but the companies are in court battles with each other right now. The Nextel cell sites exisiting and being built in the area are generally not on company-owned structures. The short explanation is that the merger will not contribute to the development of the CDMA network in that region. New CDMA sites can and are being built, but Horizon/Sprint will pay full rent and incur the same costs they would have before the merger.
