They've updated the tower improvements function on the web site. Some of the previously red bullseyes are now blue and some new ones have been added.

Heh, look! Not only does the map say I live in the "best" coverage area, but I now have EV-DO lol!

I know there will always be inconsistencies as it's impossible to get the map to match the real world perfectly, but it still amuses me.

I see a couple of new sites in the surrounding areas of Salt Lake City. One is near Sandy and the other is to the West of that one.

Either a bunch of sites in the Buffalo area got nixed, or they didnt add new towers in that area yet./

There are 4 sites in my state that were red bullseyes that are just gone, they never turned blue and no coverage was added. On the bright side, the tower that has been in the works for several years in my area is finally a red bullseye! Lets just hope it doesnt disappear.

Let me explain what happens. Some web person at Sprint looks at Sprint's internal tower maps and basically puts any of them on that show an estimated on-air date in the next 4 months. The problem is that some of those don't pan out and don't go as quickly as planned. Some of them go up even faster than planned and some of them get overlooked even. So it's all just a guessing game really. Notice that they say that all planned improvements are subject to change right on the web site. In the end I think they do an ok job at projecting the time frames. I'd say they bat around .500 to .600

The one in Sandy is on 13th East actually on top of an Elementary School. This area I used to either drop calls or get -100's. My old house and the neighborhood surrounding it is still in a "Best" area and you are lucky to get calls out there because the signal is so weak. The site West of the one in Sandy must be for capacity reasons...I remember everyone having a good signal in that area.

A lot of places have EV-DO now that don't show on the maps yet. The maps often lag behind.

Just a drop in the bucket. Areas like long island still have a lot of work to do.

Big Deal, theres always a lot of red bullseyes. A lot of the times they never turn blue, they just dissapear. Theres always more "planned" than built!

I haven't noticed that in the Los Angeles, CA area. If there's a red bullseye it almost always happens. Although I will agree that some of them don't get built in the 4 month time frame like estimated. Also I've noticed that the bulleyes are not always complete. I've seen a number of new sites go on air that never even made it to the web site. So there could also be others not shown on there waiting to come up. Plus I've also seen red bullseyes go on as planned but never make it as blue ones on there because they simply forget to add them after the site is updated. I've been very impressed with the overall accuracy of the maps here in CA.

I wouldn't call it just a drop in the bucket. If you think about it this like the 3rd or 4th major wave of sites for NYC in the past year or two. They all add up. If you go back in time it's a huge difference in coverage from when the merger was announced. I'd hate to have to go back to what we had before the merger and I bet many others would agree with me.

there are some problems with these maps. In Dodge City, KS there is one site that just has a large area a fair coverage and evdo...same thing in Northern Missouri and around Fort Scott, KS. The Missouri and Fort Scott sites look like could be new sites on nextel towers but dont have full coverage details yet. Also there is alot of future EVDO around KS and Mo the old Alamosa Area. At least its a start.

What I really mean is that Sprint cannot continue to expand simply using the old Nextel iDen towers. There are areas that they NEED to cover 4 years ago, and they just have not done. And since there are no iden towers in those areas, they havent built out in those areas.

It's not that i'm against the buildout on iden sites, its just that they need to also be adding towers elsewhere.

They are adding plenty of new CDMA only sites as well. Its not just synergy sites going up.

I have yet to see a site in the NYC metro area that has been put up in the last 6 months that isn't already an iDen site.

Do you really think you know about every site thats gone up? Have you actually been able to visit each new site? Not saying I don't believe you but at the same time that would be very unlikely.

I'm just saying that in my immediate area (Nassau County), I really have not seen any new sites come online. I'm pretty sure all recent towers in the past year have been iden add ons. Now I can't prove this at all, but maybe my map can help somehow.

You may very well be right on that. Sprint is trying utilize Nextel sites for CDMA and have made that their top priority. Can you blame them? It's very cost effective to do synergy sites (less rent to the landlord, less equipment structures needed, easier to put up, etc).

But taking a sampling of what I see in a few different west coast markets (San Fran, LA, Phoenix) they have been adding plenty of new CDMA only sites as well as synergy sites and I have no reason to believe that it's not happening the same way in NY metro. But since I don't have any detailed stats for your area I can't really dispute what you are saying.

But remember Sprint is not going to just stop putting up sites. As more and more budgets get approved they will be continuously adding fill in sites. But there's no way that they will be able to please everybody.

Very true. I guess we should just all be happy that they are adding anything at all. They went a long time without adding anything good in my area.

Just an FYI, it appears like Sprint has left out a number of new cell sites on the latest update to their maps. For example a brand new site just came on this week in Vernon, CA (near LA) and never made it to the map as either a new site or a planned future site. There are also two brand new sites in Redondo Beach, CA that were activated in the past month but once again are a no show on the map. I wonder how many others have been left off?
