I am currently on my Dads family plan but want to get my own plan. We have a little less than a year left on the family plan contract. Can I assume payments for my own line and get my own plan?

Since your father is the primary account holder, all you need to do is go into a store with him and have him authorize a split-off from his account. You may be able to do this over the phone (three-way call or something like that). Check with Verizon for the over the phone option.

You will then have your own individual line/plan and continue the contract for your line.

i was also interested in getting a blackberry but im not eligible for an upgrade yet. Will I just assume payments for the phone I have now or will they offer me an upgrade to try and suck me into another two years?

Ask for an early upgrade. Verizon is usually pretty good about doing them, especially since you will be adding data service to your line. Yes, they will require that you renew service for another 2 years. This is a standard policy of all carriers if you want a discounted device. If you don't want to renew for 2 years they will still sell you a new device...but be prepared to spend a few hundred dollars to get it.
