The most remote place I remember driving was state road 117 in Utah south of Teasdale. In the high elevation you could see for miles. I rarely saw another car on the road. It was in 2005 so analog was still running. My Alltel phone occasionally showed signal but not often.

Gallatin Canyon on US 191 from south of Gallatin Gateway 20 some miles to Big Sky with no signal, then 10 miles of signal, then 30 miles with no signal till just outside of West Yellowstone. Good thing the views are nice.

This is really a tough one to answer, since I have driven my storm chase vehicle to some very remote places, including way off the interstate in Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota, Colorado. Wyoming ... many more too numerous to mention.

Probably the most remote was in Cherry County, Nebraska. Only two or three spots in the entire county (which is about the size of the state of Connecticut) had coverage ... understandable since most of the county's population is concentrated in the city of Valentine. Outside of that, the only place there were towers were where the ranch owner wanted coverage on their property, and you could get coverage only because the road went through the ranch.

I am a storm chaser and have been in several remote locations, but the one that takes the cake was in extreme northeast New Mexico in June of 2011. We had solid service until we traveled far out into the country away from any cities, towns, or highways. We were basically northwest of Clayton, New Mexico, in the Clayton Lake State Park area probably 15 miles north, northwest of Rabbit Ear Mountain on highway 370. Once we were 6 or 8 miles beyond Rabbit Ear Mountain we lost our signal. I actually use a Rockies amplifier made by Peak Reception, so it helps immensely in maintaining coverage, but this area was so desolate I wasn't surprised we eventually lost coverage.

The most remote place i have ever been in my car? Well a lot of places the most remote in the traditional sense would be upstate new york in the Adirondacks Near Johnson's pond signal was very very spotty with all the mountains and thick tree cover. But by far the most remote place i have been in the way of cell phone coverage was northwest Oklahoma while chasing with the several hundred square mile area of ZERO coverage even 1x was impossible to come by with Verizon. :censored:

The most remote place I've been with my car was on the north shore of Lake Superior. In the area of a town called Hovland, closer to the Canadian border than anything else. A relative of mine used to have a place that was about 3 or 4 miles back in the woods off the highway, and needless to say, when you are that far in the woods smoke signals are about the only thing that work for communicating with people.

Remote Place? Smokey Mountains National Park. It's nothing but scenery and animals. No service at all...from anyone...on the one way road in and out. You are stuck on this road going 10 MPH through the park, usually with a line of vehicles, for over an hour. I prayed we didn't break down because I think we'd get eaten by the nocturnal animals.

Some of the most remote places I have driven my vehicle:

    - Burr Trail from Bullfrog Marina to Boulder, Utah. Service near the marina was good (VZW), but the further into desolation the harder a signal is to come by.

    - US 50 through Nevada

    - Hwy 180 from Carlsbad, NM to El Paso

Both of which have large gaps in coverage.

    Thanks!

The contest is closed to new entries -- Here is how we'll pick the winner!

We are going to use the powerball number in Powerball Lottery

    1. I have numbered each accepted entry. The numbers are from 1-30, excluding #7, that entry was withdrawn.
    2. The winner will be determined by the powerball number of Wednesday night's (8/17/11) Powerball drawing.
    3. If the powerball number is 31 or greater the winner will not be determined and will then use each subsequent drawing until the powerball number is 31 or lower. (Possible numbers are 1-39 and drawings are held every Wed and Sat.)

Powerball drawings are at 11pm Eastern time and you can see the numbers here:
    Powerball - Home

We are using the RED ball on the right. If the digit on that ball matches the entry number I've put in your post, YOU ARE THE WINNER!

    GOOD LUCK TO ALL! :thumb:

The Powerball number was 36.

That means we still don't have a winner. The next drawing is Wednesday 8/24.

humm..... Seems to me that any balls higher than the highest accepted submission would have logically been eliminated at the outset. Barring that, at least subsequent pulls until a valid contestant number was pulled.

They'll eventually draw a lower number at some point in the future. Best of luck to anyone who has entered the contest as it's a really nice package!

FINALLY! Yes we certainly do. :)

I am thinking our admin JFB has been affected by Irene since he has not declared the winner or logged on since yesterday.

I sent a PM to the winner on Sunday to give me a number to contact her . Have heard nothing . Should we set a time limit to claim the prize? If not claimed another winner is chosen somehow ?

The winner appears to be from Maryland. It is possible that there are still hurricane related issues to deal with.

I didn't think much happened in the DC area from Irene, just mostly rain and not too much wind.
(The poster appears to be from the DC area, and not the Eastern Shore which was where lots of the effects / damage was).

Perhaps last week's 5.8 Virginia earthquake affected that region more so. :(

I'm in the DC area and the hurricane and earthquake did not do much here, although from what I hear, some in the DC area are still without power.

I just want to give the system to a winner that can use and appreciate it . It is up to JFB ( his site and contest ) how long we should wait for a response. And when we should choose another winner.

Looks like #2 was the Powerball drawn last night on 09/03/11. Did the first winner ever come around to claim this fabulous prize? If it were me I would have been all over it!
