Love this question. The most remote place I have been has probably been the mountain passes in Vermont. I had Sprint at the time and let's just say that service was spotty, at best. Coverage was not easy to come by.
Driving on I-80 through the PA mountains was also pretty remote.

My nearest low to no signal areas have been been between the mainline levies of the Mississippi River, below Memphis. This is the unprotected side, where the spring floods run freely. Once you get past the paralleling state highways like MS-1, and your carrier has only a PCS license, you must often return to the levy top to reach back to the nearest site.

Anyone who uses Sprint for storm chasing is insane, lol. I can't think of a carrier to use with less rural coverage and slower speeds than Sprint. Great review for the product though.

I guess the most remote places I have taken my car would either be along AZ SR98 between Page and the US 160 or along AZ SR377 between Holbrook and Heber.SR 377 is almost totally without signal unless you have Verizon (Alltel).

I took my car to Warren OH, some place I stopped at on my way to Chicago. I thought that was kinda scary since it was so foggy I could only see less than one cat length ahead and had to drive like3am in the morning. Sprint signal was fine. Thank god!

Wow, as far as remoteness theres a few places I can name and they're all in California.

    1. Climbing to 8,000 ft on Mount Shasta in 2007, a beautiful place and got a full signal on Verizon up there.

    2. Driving in the middle of the desert between Mono Lake to the Nevada line on Route 167,
full signal there on Alltel and Verizon's network more than 25 miles away from any tower or town - August 2008.

    3. Going remote definitely was Yosemite National Park, I was there in August 2008 and had
no signal west of Lee Vining until about Manteca including Mariposa and Yosemite Valley.
Thats 125 miles along highways 120 & 140 without signal (Golden State Cellular
wasn't avalable for roam). I hope VZW's got signal in Yosemite Valley by now, I know AT&T does...

P.S. I got the home amplifier but still I just wanted to share my story. ;)

Hardest place i've had to get signal was in the Ouachita National forest in Western-South Western Arkansas. Even with a competitors amp, i didn't get signal for over 50 miles.

Western Kansas/Eastern Colorado is pretty desolate...there are more windfarms than people and it's booooooring. The only thing that'd save it is if you could talk to your friends...too bad the reception sucks.

Southern Kansas/Northern Oklahoma is no picnic, either.

Well, I know I'm probably too late for this but its worth posting. Last year i took a road trip in September. Started out from my home in Tracy, CA. Drove to Mt. Shasta, CA. It wasn't what I'd hoped for as far as scenic photography was concerned so I turned on my GPS and plugged in Orick, CA (on the coast). My intent was to do some photography of the redwoods during sunrise around the Prairie Creek Redwoods state park area. Now, I don't know what Garmin was thinking, but it took my 4-door sedan on switchback, dirt roads across the mountain range where no GPS should ever take a person. Shear cliffs on one side and steep walls on the other of a single-lane road. 5-hours later I made Orick.

But the oddest, most remote place that I went on this trip AND actually had service was a state park east of Medford, Oregon about 1 hour. I tried to find it in google just now, but I don't see it. The park had a few awesome waterfalls and my buddy & I were shooting pics with our phones and MMS messaging each other back and forth. (He had hiked, actually climbed down, to the bottom of the falls and was taking pics down there. I was at the top of the falls where the path was.) We were both blown away that we had service.

I live in northern Florida, when I go through to and from university every day on my commute... I have a large dead spot for about fifteen miles; going through the Ocala National Forest creates a large dead zone, as well as traveling just a few minutes north of my town (where I work) there is not any service either since it is rural farmland and pine forest. So while I sit at home my service works because I have an amplifier in my home; but having one in my car would really help me receive important phone calls, and allow my phone to operate in the case of emergency - because I have been in an emergency situation on the road and have not been able to dial 9-1-1 which is truly scary. Luckily after driving another few miles I was able to call and report the incident. (yet if I was going the opposite direction I would not have been so lucky).

I have been all over the contiguous 49 states in the US. I have been in back country sleeping amongst wolves and under the Eagle nests. As silly as it sounds, the most remote place I always end up is in my own home. I live in Georgia on the Alabama line...in Polk County. Although the wireless coverage in this area is spotty, I do NOT get a wireless signal in my home. Even though there are huge windows all through the house, a wireless signal of anykind is rare. The amplifier for my home was useless as it did not receive a signal to amplify. I think the vehicle amplifier system would be the perfect solution. When I'm home I could use the car wireless amplifier system to boost the signal into my home. (Seems like it would make sense) Then maybe my company would let me telecommute and I would be well on my way to going green!

Well, it wasn't all that remote but it is MY most remote and it seems absurd that there should be reception problems here.

A slightly curving and hilly back road in Fulton MD (not more than 30 miles outside of Washington DC) consistently drops my phone out. I currently am using an iPhone on AT&T

Mtns in California Re: CONTEST - WIN an IN Vehicle Wireless Amplifier!

Two places--the middle of the desert and the San Bernardino Mountains. But since I tend to travel more in the mtns that is the location I will use.

Up past Hanna Flat (a campground) it gets a bit spotty for both Verizon and Sprint. I did get a little bit of reception but it was spotty. My last big adventure where I was happy the cell worked was scoping out the burn area after we were allowed back to town after a major evacuation during wildfires. I felt a bit more secure with the cell and since many of the trees had burned the reception had improved!

The most remote place I've taken my car to is to the local market. All jokes aside, I've had the worst reception in places near the Rocky Mountain while approaching the Midwest. The drive from LA to Las Vegas isn't too shabby, but hopefully the service will get better!

One of the most remote areas that I have been in with now signal on my data card was this year in SE Montana while chasing a tornado warned supercell. Data is critical in these areas for safety as much as anything. This would have helped greatly.

The most remote place that I have taken my vehicle was the Tonto Hills forest region northeast of Cave Creek, AZ at the end of July. After exiting the main highway outside of Carefree, I was on an unpaved portion of the roadway well off of the main road and there was absolutely no cell service whatsoever once I got down into the unpaved, off road portion of the forest.

It's not "remote", but as a storm chaser you learn of all the data holes throughout the country. Western Kansas can be a black hole. I spend alot of time there and most of the time I am cursing my phone.

Keweenaw Peninsula in Michigan - said to be north of 80% of the population of Ontario. Reception up and down the peninsula is spotty; it'd be interesting to see how much an amplifier would help in that hilly terrain. Either way, I'm sure one would help on the drive up from lower Michigan; there's a ton of flat terrain there with distant cell sites.
