I've seen a number of references that place Nextel in at number 5. There's got to be an "official" third-party that tracks the number of nationwide subscribers/customers... Gartner?

Nextel and Voicestream are placed somewhere between 5 and 7 but I don't know how it goes. But just fill in the blanks as you believe it is.

I hate to argue with the webmaster but I'm not sure those numbers are 100% accurate. You have SunCom (Triton PCS) which I believe has 700,000-800,000 or so subscribes as larger then Cricket. However I'm pretty sure Cricket is bigger, I believe they now have more then 1 million users.

I'm pretty sure Cricket is larger then SunCom (Triton PCS) you might want to re-check your figures and sources for that top 20 list.

<< Leap reported net additions of approximately 268,000, ending the quarter with 1.387 million Cricket customers >>

I'm almost positive that Cricket has around 1 million+ subscribers now.

How would Matt and TNDan21 arrange this list?
By the way, where does Worldcomm stand in this list? like in position 186? I know they don't physically own a network but they have to have subscribers.

The list is OK I guess, I don't know all the specifics about the smaller carriers, but the put it on their websites - that's where I found info this afternoon. I would remove the companies that have been bought, as their numbers should go in with the larger carriers who bought them. Alltel/Centurytel was approved by the FCC yesterday, but has not closed yet. AT will still be smaller than VS (7.5 vs 7.4M customers, plus AT doesn't grow that fast, so they won't pass VS in Q2) Worldcom has about 2 million customers.

I know the first 8 on the list are right, but after that I have no idea. I do however know that Cricket is bigger then SunCom (Triton PCS).

I would have thought Edge(AT&T affiliate)Wireless would be on that list somewhere. They are providing service in several markets now in Northern California, Southern Oregon, and Eastern Idaho. I understand they also have liscences for and are planning to expand to more of California(all the way down to the San Luis Obispo areas), Nevada, Washington, Utah, Colorado, and Montana.

Verizon isn't loosing customers, granted last quarter they didn't add that many customers but they still added them. I don't know where you get this stupid crap that Verizon is loosing customers.

They lose 284,000 customers and only gained a net of a little over 100,000.

aiwapro quit it. EVERY carrier loses customers. Verizon decided to tell us the exact number. The term is called CHURN. It's a percentage of your EXISTING subscriber base that leave your service every quarter. Verizon has one of the lowest churn rates - somewhere around 2-2.5% each month (that's 600,000+ who leave EVERY quarter. 2% churn means about a quarter (24%) of your customers on January 1 are gone by December 31.

OTOH, VoiceStream contract churn was 3% for Q1. It is coming down steadily, and I've heard it was just 2.6% in May. (VS prepay churn is higher, but that includes customers they are moving from preypay to contract plans, or those who leave....since at this time VS is trying to reduce prepay it's not really a strike against them)

So Verizon's raw number might be higher since they have more customers, but as a percentage it is low. Credit where credit is due.

Aiwapro you are just stupid I swear, every carrier looses customers from Churn yes but they added customers overall. It's simply math if you loose so many customers but you gain more then that then you still end up gaining customers.

By the way Matt I can beat that Churn rate SunCom (Triton PCS) has a very low churn rate of only 1.88 percent. That is one of the lowest in the wireless industry.

I wonder when Sprint will surpass ATT. IMO ATT isn't all that great. Expensive cheap phones (5165 for 80$!) and their northeast coverage sucks, let alone their rate plans are merely OK. Ok, I am with Verizon and have a slight bias towards them but I am really surprised they didn't add too many customers last quarter. IMO Verizon needs to become "cooler" and win back some of the younger crowd (w/ downloadable ringtones, cooler phones).

I'd love to hear some specs on Cingular's churn rate, actually.... Around here, I don't know of any other company that keeps customers as long as Cingular does. I know people that have been with them for 6-7 years easily. However, Cingular doesn't appeal to us cellphone geeks out there, due to too many holes in coverage and roaming off other people's networks way too much, I guess. US Cellular around here seems to be quite good at keeping customers as well... They don't offer wireless web or any other real "power user" features, though. :-( Coverage is quite good around here and their customer service can't be beat.

I'm not STUPID TnDan; I know every company looses customers and gains some aswell, but Verizon did gain the least.

Suncom also has a very low amount of customers. I know, I know, they don't service a huga area, I'm just joking ok.

You do have a good point there aiwapro, out of the major carriers Verizon Wireless added the fewest customers last quarter. My guess is they will do better this quarter though with there new plans, such as giving more anytime minutes on the Local plans plus unlimited nights and weekends. The America's Choice Plans have gotten better too with unlimited nights and weekends plus mobile web for only $5 more.

Yeah, some of their plans are better. The America's Choice sounds good, though I have never took the time to sit down and read all about it, since I don't plan on getting that plan or getting Verizon Wireless anytime soon.

I've got to be the English stickler here, it is LOSES, not looses. Ok, I know I am not perfect, I can't type that well, nor do I spell everything correctly. But that one really bothers me, Verizon isn't loosing customers, unless they are prostitutes or something! Lol [IMG]

Well all I know is that the press release specificly said that Verizon lost 284,000 customers, thus giving them a net add of a little over 100,000 customers.
