    Okay, gang, here's quite different.

I recently had a several hour 'sit-down' with the principals of a S.F. Bay area startup, Public Wireless. That firm is building pico-cell sites into public coin telephone enclosures, and other structures.

For the coin phone application, the PCS-band radio and related equipment is housed above the phone, and the antennas are built into the plastic public phone sign above the enclosure. Backhaul to the MTSO is via a secured DSL floating on top of the coin phone twisted pair.

As you can see from the cropped photograph below (provided to me by the company), the technology is already being deployed, and can be adapted for use by any PCS carrier.

This is something to keep an eye on. :coolshade

This is strange as in many areas coin telephones have been removed since they are no longer profitable because of cellular telephone use.

    Jay,

Yes, coin phones are being removed (especially in metro areas), but this does extend the economic life of marginal sites. Also, in rural areas that still have coin phones, but poor wireless, this needs a need.

As far as I know, Swisscom has also had pico cells installed in their public phone booths for quite a while now.

I just noticed yesterday at a 7-11 that they only had one phone booth outside, but you could see the holes in the brick where 2 others have been removed.
