Hmm... Weird review. It doesn't seem to echo the comments heard about the Sanyo reputation we all come to expect. http://www.cnet.com/wireless/0-1923403-8-20518629-2.html?tag=st.wr.1923403-8-20518629-1.arrow.1923403-8-20518629-2 "We tested the dual-mode (CDMA 1900; AMPS 800) mobile in San Francisco and the surrounding Bay Area using Sprint PCS service. We consistently got a signal but found call quality to be hit or miss. When transmissions were clear, callers said they couldn't tell we were using a cell phone. However, some callers complained that our sentences were getting clipped; on our end, we heard a lot of crackling on the line." Here's the surprise (at the end of the review): "Overall, the 4900 isn't a bad phone, but it's not one of our favorites. If you're set on having a candy bar-style mobile with a color LCD, we also recommend checking out Hitachi's P300. It's slimmer, with a bigger display and more features."
I'd have to agree that the Hitachi P300 is a better phone than the 4900, except for three areas: 1. The P300 is only single band 2. The 4900 has a longer battery life 3. The 4900 is much cheaper If single band is all you need, buy the P300 for a bigger screen, better PIM, better email, and a light sensor that makes the phone ring louder in a pocket or purse. Buy the 4900 to get a great dual band phone for almost no bucks ($20 at amazon.com, whereas the P300 is $180). Carl
I still have yet to hear about the P300's reception. The 4900 is amazing. No other Sprint phone comes close the signal strength of the 4900 in weak areas. I should know, I have or family has tested 7 Sprint phones recently, and none even was able to make a call where the 4900 had 2 bars and made the call every time. I do hope the P300 is a great phone. Although it will take a lot for it to surpass the 4900 as a workhorse phone.
I have the scp-4900 and absolutely love it, but the only complaint so far is the speakerphone. I can hear great on it but when I talk, the other person complains that I am cutting out while on the speakerphone. Anyone else having this problem?
I haven't used the speakerphone a whole lot, but the times I have, the other end thought I sounded great. I do notice that it is half-duplex and I am aware when to talk. I've been using it as a hands free replacement in the car, and I just love it. The only problem I have is that the mic is on the front and the speaker is on the back. You either comprimise the send or receive quality as to how you have your phone turned.
CNET just bites. I wish there was a better place to get reviews of technology. The 4900 is the superior Sprint phone. I said phone, not gameboy!!!
i am pretty sure the speakerphone is full duplex.. half duplex would only allow you to hear the phone, not talk back into it. maybe i am wrong..
That's what the Sprint website says, but it is actually half duplex. I've talked directly to Sanyo on this one.
I look down on CNET reviews now. They are obviously not too bright. I know this for a fact because i went and read the samsung reviews. And they praise those phones. What morons
Half duplex just means no simultaneous TX and RX. You either talk or listen. I have used the speakerphone quite a bit and it is definitely half duplex. Sanyo simply calls it a "high-quality speakerphone". Sprint should take full duplex off their website.
hey, come down. I just think they need to re-evaluate criteria for reviews. CNET seems to be giving biased reviews or reviews that just aren't thorough. I think CNET is a great site, and I hope I can rebuild trust in their reviews.
Are they any Sprint phones which are truly full duplex? I don't think so. I think they call them full duplex because they are a step above their original half duplex speaker phones.
