I wish we could tell carriers what's on our minds, if anyone knows how, please share. Here's an example of what I was trying to say. I was trying to think of DRM, but couldn't remember the acronym for some reason. So much for customer choice and device interoperability. http://www.wirelessweek.com/article/CA6282669.html Dan
I understand that DRM makes sense because companies don't want content passed on from one person to that person's friends, family, etc. but I don't understand why they can't make it so that once you download a file to your phone you cannot continue to move it to your next phone and your next phone, etc. They could regulate that by using the SIM card, you would think. Although, I guess, in the quest for the almight dollar/yen/pound, etc. keeping it to one phone only makes $en$e.
Hehe... Cingular users want flips.....Sprint users want candybars. I guess we all want what others have.
I love the flip. Always had one, never had a candybar phone unless you want to count that POS Nokia I was given as a loaner years ago when I sent my StarTac in for service. Was that a candybar? That thing was huge!! Epecially compared to my StarTac. That damn Nokia kept autodialing 911.
That's what keyguard is for, Jay!:lmao: j/k. That's too bad, Nokia actually makes some pretty good bar-style phones. I've never played with a Motorola bar phone but I'm sure they have some pretty good ones. Gideon H seems to really like his E398 and the SLVR looks pretty cool, although it doesn't have all the features I would have given it. (cough-cough-EDGE-cough-cough!)
That's simple to answer: switch carriers and go Cingular GSM......to date they don't tend to go propretary given the huge volume of GSM sales worldwide. And there are more GSM candybars available...basic ones too. Nokia is starting to introduce more candybars for CDMA, but to date most of VZW phones seem to come from asia...samsung, LG where flips are very popular. Candybars are still the favorite in western Europe.
Unfortuantely they took my StarTac, and handed me this enormous Nokia and an AC charger and said "Use this until you get your phone back". No manual, no This is how you turn it on, nothing... That was back in the pre-Cingular Cellular One days. I didn't know what a key guard was, or how to use it since my only experience was with flip phones.
I probably would switch to Cingular, but their network isn't as good as VZWs dismal network here in MN.
DH & I have always had a clamshell - for the past 10 years. My stepfam always had candybars. I'm short & a clamshell is much easier to slide in my front pocket & not poke me when i sit down. And I've never had a hinge squeak or play on any of my phones. Motorola, Nokia & now LG. I do like the look of the sliders though...
My Motorola V525 hinge squeeks from time to time but it's probably due to some grime between the hinge connectors.
Time to re-enact an old thread, After using a Nokia 6126 for about 4 months due to damaging my SE I have changed my mind in preference. I prefer a candy bar phone over the clam shell, I bought another SE through e-bay and I cannot stress enough how much I missed my SE.
Since I dumped my old Samsung A930, I have used 2 bar style phones, the Q on Verizon and the LG CG180 on AT&T. I really love the form factor of the Q, big but not clunky feeling. The phone is wider than any plain phone I've ever used... which I love. It feels normal... I kinda wish all phones couuld be this wide. On the other hand, the LG 180 felt tiny in my hands... I think that my fingers woulf have cramped up if I did a lot of texting on it. I did like that the phone was very light... I still prefer flip phones... but the Q has opened up my eyes for different phone types. I suppose if the phone is big/wide enough, BAr phones are an option for me LOL
I have always gone for flip phones. I like the nice big display inside the phone and more space on the keypad. The bar phones don't have as much space to use so the screen is smaller and the keypad is more cramped usually. I did not realize that I was posting on a 2 year old thread.
I would also go for a slider, some of the sliders are very nice phones and I am hoping maybe SE will come out with something in a bar or slider with 3G.
I prefer to use clamshell type phones. However, some of the newer SE Candybar phones have been really tempting me lately.
It also makes a difference where you are which is more popular. Bar style is far more popular in Europe. Clamshell/flips are more popular in the US and in the far east (Japan.)
I wonder why that is. Personally I like flip phones because the keyboard and screen are covered when not in use. Plus flip phones are more Star-Trek "esque". -Jay
LOL, I think a slider falls more in the Flip category as the keyboard is covered when not in use. My new Tilt is a slider. -Jay
Interestingly, outside the US, many users are convinced that flip phones eventually scratch the screen with the keypad. The frame around the keypad and/or the one around the screen is also a common complaint. Oh, isn't that profound
I know when I used my V551, 557,V3, and the 6126 the keypad eventually left marks on the screen. My previous SE for the 6 months I used it the screen was still in great shape because I took care of the phone...... well that is until I ran it over with my car. And Charlyee, Don't be fresh.
In the UK at the moment sliders seem to be quite popular although candybar handsets are still popular, if not the most popular.
