I'm looking to get a new wireless plan. I live in central nj, but spend summers in the catskills, in Orange County, in the Ellenville/Kerhonkson area. Anyone know which service is best in that area?
Re: cingular vs. verizon vs. spring in catskills Whatever you do...do NOT go with t-mobile. Ive been end to end on route-17 from 87 to binghamton with a solid sprint signal the entire length. I'm not sure how the coverage is far from the 17, but im guessing that sprint would die off.
Re: cingular vs. verizon vs. spring in catskills I was up in the Monticello/Loch Sheldrake area over the summer, and had a passable signal with VZW - 2 bars, give or take. Cell service has never been great up there, but I would think that any carrier on 800/850 (read: VZW or Cingular) would have a distinct advantage over an all-PCS (1900) carrier like Sprint.
Re: cingular vs. verizon vs. spring in catskills Cingular roams on Dobson in Monticello/Loch Sheldrake area or in Orange County NY. Though not all areas. Northeast close to Vermont and Montreal, Canada they roam on Unicel. Cingular and T-Mobile Ended Roaming in NY, (only Emergency 911) but Cing has a Bigger Foot Print in NY.
Thanks Larry and all: Location in Ellenville/Wawarsing area is about 25-30 minutes from 17. Is there any way to find out about the VZW or Cingular signal in a specific area? BTW, thanks for the tip re. T-Mobile. I was considering it, b/c the family plan is well-priced, but I'll drop the thought now.
No, but the situation here is that in your Area Native Coverage is provided by https://www.celloneusa.com/ECellPortal/ECell.portal
T-Mobile's coverage locator shows that they roam on Dobson, in that area. Dobson's coverage is probably as good as, or better than Verizon's.
Be careful with t-mobile out there. Back in the day when i had t-mobile and was in the catskills, t-mobile did no roaming what so ever, and also had to native coverage passed middletown.
This is true in that area But: There are areas where it will no roam on Dobson, even if there's a Dobson Tower meaning their roaming w/ Dobson is selective. T-Mobile and Cingular ended roaming in NY but Cing has a Bigger foot print in NY and their roaming w/ Dobson is Not Selective. Why Not just Go w/ Dobson. When you are roaming Acces to Voicemail may not Work even if you can use your Phone. If this is Queens,NY you can go w/ T-Mobile.
Nothing for you as the end customer. Cingular or T-Mobile will have to pay that carrier for every minute you talk on their network, but since you have a nationwide plan, it's free for you. IF T-Mobile shows roaming coverage on their coverage locator, then they have a roaming agreement in the area. If both Cingular and t-Mobile will be roaming on, say Dobson in the area anyways, and coverage would, hence, be equal, then why not go with T-Mobile that has cheaper plans?
Cingular signed a preferred roaming partner agreement with Dobson last year. Considering T-Mo's Swiss Cheese coverage, and the above agreement, go with Cingular. I used to have Verizon in this area and dropped them for lack of decent coverage, and failure to address the same. Cingular is decent and works most of the time fine. They do roam on Dobson when necessary and it works. Dobson's plans suck. Although this area is a big challenge for cellular coverage anyway. I have not found another area so difficult to deal with from Champlain to Florida. A lot of the problem is NIMBY's.
Thanks, Momcat. I'm wavering between Cingular & Verizon, so I appreciate your input. T-Mobile is definitely out, b/c it's weak in my year-round place in Cen. NJ.
Depending on where in Central Jersey you are, coverage with T-Mobile has been improving drastically over the last year, but they do need to keep adding towers to cover the holes, but seem aggressive at it around here. As for area's like Upstate NY, VT Etc... it seems either Verizon or Cingular have an advantage depending on roaming agreements and T-Mobile has made alot of roaming agreements throughout the country, especially with 850 carriers. I am not sure what roaming agreements Sprint has with other carriers up there but if they have the same as Verizon they should be decent. If you have a friend with Verizon & 1 with Cingular take a weekend road trip to check out the differences where you would use the phone the most.
If your in the area of Great Adventure Cingular had better coverage then Verizon, but if I remember correctly Verizon was looking to finally add some towers in that area, as for T-Mobile I can see them being less of a choice for you down there over the other 2.
As I'm sure Beren will mention, there's more to Jackson than SFGA. (Not MUCH more, mind you, but...) SFGA is actually right on the border with Millstone Township, whereas Jackson Township extends as far to the east as Route 9.
Oh ok, I know where your talking about. I guess T-Mobile is working more on expanding there network in the more populated area's first, then work there way down into area's like this. As I said hopefully you have some friends that have both carriers & are willing to take a road trip so you can see which covers you the best where you need it.
