I'm currently about a year and a half into a two year contract with Cingular. And I'm thinking about switching to a local Cell provider (Cellular One) for a couple of reasons. I'm wondering what some of the general advantages and disadvantages are with going with a smaller provider vs a nationwide one. I assume with a nationwide provider like Cingular, you have less of a chance of roaming and racking up some charges there. But what about some of the other features other than voice? Like data? Would Cell One be able to provide similar services in general? Or do you miss out going with these smaller providers on things like that?

    Thanks for any input.

I have Cellular One in northern michigan and they are very good. I'm not to sure about PA. But, Cellone does provide EDGE data service in most of their licensed areas. I'm pretty sure in your area all the cellone towers are edge. You will roam on primarily Cingular or T-mobile outside of your native area, but I think if you roam more than 50% of the time in two months they can terminate your contract with them.

the local companies tend to have really good coverage cuz they only have to focus on a small area rather than the nationwide carriers that have to cover the whole U.S.

they sometimes arent as good quality........i know IMMIX down here in Southeastern PA is infamous for dropped calls but has unlimited texting on all of their plans and that keeps most people happy...........

local carriers offer better deals........better coverage...........but may not be as reliable in general as a nationwide carrier

Thanks for the info guys. I think we'll probably give Cell One a go here once my contract is up with Cingular. They have a nice little store I pass everyday on my way home from work, which would be nice if I had questions or anything. I stopped there the other day and picked up a brochure, and yeah, it looks like they do have some nice deals on service plans and stuff.

Cellularone does not provide coverage to northeast PA at this time. When I put my zip code in their coverage locater it comes back as " you have entered a zip code that is not a cellular one service area".
This link shows a list of areas where Cellularone does provide coverage in PA, but NE PA is not listed on there. http://www.cellularone.com/Coverage.asp

Where in NE PA are you? They primarily cover the more rural areas. Last summer they purchased a local Cell provider in my area, Endless Mountain Wireless. I'm up in the Tunkhannock Area, about 30+ minutes north of Scranton. I'm not certain, but I believe because of their partnership agreements with Cingular, Cingular and Cellular One do not cover the same areas. Cingular gets the cities and Cellular one gets the rural areas for the most part. Can anyone else confirm or elaborate on that?

I live more toward the north east Philly area. That's probably why coverage is coming up as unavailable able with CellularOne for my area.
