what is the difference between the V3 phone from Cingular and the V3m phone from Verizon? Is the V3 a downgrade from the V3m and if so, does Cingular offer a V3m? Thanks Charlie
The biggest difference is that Cingular and Verizon use two totally different network technologies. Cingular uses GSM based technology, and Verizon uses CDMA. The networks are not compatible, so one could not use a cingular phone on Verizon, and vise versa. The V3m has a better camera and I believe a removable memory card. A better comparison would be Cingular's V3i vs Verizon's V3m. They have similar features, but they are designed to run on the two different networks. -jay
OK, so if I move to Cingular, I should look for a V3i if I want a comparable phone to the V3m. Cingular has a tower nearby and my V3m (Verizon) (still inside the 15 day guarantee) doesn't hold a charge for more than 6 hours. (probably because I don't get a good signal in my area for Verizon and it searches all the time for signal). Thanks for the help Jay, you always seem to have the answer
Yeah, if battery life is an issue with you then you really need GSM. GSM is able to utilize the battery more efficiently, and when in low signal areas its worse because the phone steps up the transmit power to try and find a better signal. -Jay
Jay, again, thanks for all your help. I have another question. I'm looking to try a Cingular plan and none of the Cingular stores here have the V3i phones. I'm really not interested in being able to listen to MP3's with my phone but I do want the capability to upload MP3 ringtones. Does this phone work with the MPT4.x tools and can I upload Mp3's as ringtones like I could with the V3m? Also, is this a phone that I will be able to SEEM if necessary? Thanks Again Charlie
If you just want mp3 ringtones, and aren't interested in the mp3 player option get the regular V3. Its a lot cheaper and available at any Cingular store. I merely suggested the V3i because its feature set was more like the V3m than the regular V3. I know that your version of MPT will work with a regular V3, am unsure of the newer versions. Maybe, maybe not. Any of them will be able to be modded and seem edited if you choose. The regular V3 may give you more options because its been out longer and the hackers have had more time to play with it. -Jay
Thanks again, I went out and got a V3. So far I have a good signal in the places I frequent. We'll see what happens.
I'm sure you will be pleased. The V3 is a nice phone. In a time which many phone models are discontinued after a few months the original V3 has been out there for a couple of years. I think this says a lot about its quality and popularity. If it wasn't any good it would have been discontinued by now, no matter how cool it looked. -Jay
Jay, I have a question about using a Cingular v3 in Europe. Does the v3 have a removable sim card that can temporarily be replaced with a pre-paid French sim card? GeoMatthews
Yes, In the battery compartment is a slot with the Sim card in it. Not sure on the Pre-Paid (cause I don't know enough about it) but it does take a Sim card.
Now the question is: Does anyone have experience with using the Razr v3 with a temporary replacement sim card in a foreign county? Anyone? Anyone?
@geomathews I'm not terribly sure of Cingular's policy on unlocked handsets, but they may sell them unlocked already or be willing to unlock it for you (perhaps for a fee). Alternatively you could try and get a locked handset unlocked from a local mobile shop (the independent ones). A third option would be to look to buy an unlocked handset from ebay or from abroad (although you should make sure a foriegn handset supports Cingular's frequencies).
I believe Cingular will unlock your phone after you're a customer in good standing for 90 days. They unlocked mine before I went on a trip to the UK recently and I used a UK prepaid SIM with no problem. Had great service everywhere over there and the phone worked great.
