i'm in the Amherst area and I've had cingular for three years. It sucks !! I get more no service than service and I've had the phone in a few times for upgrade. I also have Sprint and it's not to bad but this week i'm changing to verizon. One year contract and if it doesn't work I'm back to land lines and no cell phone. Just like the old days, when you get home you check your messages and return your calls. This crap for $40 + taxes and surcharges for no service is out of control. I don't need to talk to anybody that bad and nobody needs to talk to me until I get home. I am totally feed up with cell phones and I think for the money and aggravation we put out for these things the service should be flawless. Maybe we should go back to the Pony Express at least you know it'll take a month to deliver, no surprises.

The problem with static is probably to do with the trunks that feed the switch. Its a problem that's popping up with the long distance carriers who backhaul the reaffic from the cellsite to the switch back through the PSTN (local land line provider):O

    So i'm not crazy? Hurray!

As for 246's post (welcome to WA, by the way) i have heard that a lot recently. The few people i know with Cingular HATE it around here. In their words "i don't get service anywhere!"

That sounds like a more realistic possibility: trunk lines can be bad sometimes.

When's the last time you went to a town board meeting?
With an area like Amherst, NY that is so set against any carrier building sites anywhere, at damn near any height. Yet has lost so much more greenspace in favor of pavement, their town board needs to realize, that no more than the power company can feed sub divisions with an extension cord, nor the water authority feed subdivisions with 1/2" copper pipe. The Wireless carriers cannot "feed" users from outside the town's borders. Your problem will be the same with damn near any carrier, IMHO. The real problem with that area lies with that silly Town Board. Go to your Town Board and tell them you actually want something in return for the high taxes you pay. Something tangible, other than their own salaries.

Mind you this is the same Town Board that lets developers build on soft soil. And now ya got thousands of people complaining about their houses sinking, with no recourse whatsoever. So I wouldn't expect the wireless thing to get solved anytime soon.

I'll bet they researched that issue through and through? Try and get that past the the guy who's homes are sinking.

I'd rent on the East side before I ever set foot there, much less gave them a nickel in taxes for sure, but that's just my own opinion.

Your best bet is try other carriers where YOU are gonna use your phone, at various times of the day, then you will have real world experience as to what suits you best, where you are most likely to use it!

That's strange, I thought the exact opposite about this area. I see cell towers everywhere! So many along the 290, the 990...from monopoles with 7 carriers to high tension power lines. Right now looking out my window, i see a 300 ft radio tower from UB, and a 150 foot Sprint PCS tower with 3 carriers on it?

Is Amherst really that against towers?

You could also print out this article to give to the zoning board & town commitee to help educate them on the need for the towers.

Out of curiosity, why have you kept the cellular phone for three years if it is terrible? Have you tried other providers? I see you have Sprint and Verizon listed. I am not aware of any three year contracts, so why have you not canceled?

I'd say so. How many people you honestly think live near all that commercial mess you refer to, UB, 290, (not counting students of course) the blvd etc...can't be many when it's all commercially developed, just look around. take a spin thru the area between transit, main st, the millersport, and Sheridan. Stick to the neighborhoods where the people are and count how many sites you see, take note of height if ya find them.

Agree it's nice to use ur phone in the commercial areas too, but most people like the guy above would be happy in their house or the corner pub.
And get frustrated when they can't. I would too.

One day i'll take a ride around the area and take a look at the towers. I miss being home on Long Island, they will put a tower anywhere there!

Wow, how did i miss that.

Anyway, it looks like I wont have to go to far. Someone erected a new tower on UB campus just a quarter of a mile down the road. No panels yet, so i'm not even sure if its a cellular carrier. Common sense would say no, because there are already so many towers and sites around that area.

It looks like tomorrow is going to be a beautiful day, so that is my dad to go tower hunting. Break out the GPS, lets go hunting!

Hurray! It's tower hunting day! I'm aiming for 10 towers today, hopefully more. I'm also going to get a closer look at the new Cingular tower that was just put up down the road.

I'm in Schenectady, NY and I started getting bad service just this past mid-October. I have this long forums post on Cingular's site about how I found out my phone was registering with someplace in Maryland. That solved my "static" but my reception is still poor.
