    Hi everyone,

Could someone please tell me whether it is possible to use a cingular Razor on a the Verizon Network? The phone is already unlocked and works on other carriers.

    Thank you,

Cingular uses GSM. Verizon uses CDMA. They are two completely different wireless technologies - hardware for one won't work on the other. You can unlock your Cingular V3 and use it on T-Mobile if you like, but not on Verizon or Sprint.

Well, thanks for clearing that up. I have a lot of Cingular Razors and we have now switched to Verizon. Guess they all just became paper weights..

I have the Samsung A795 from Verizon that is GSM and that is the SIM card I tried to use in my unlocked Razor. It didn't work this way but it does work with a t-mobile card in it instead.

Hi davido, the Samy A795 is NA CDMA & Eurasian GSM. The NA GSM frequencies are 850 & 1900 for Cingular & 1900 for T-Mobile. The Eurasian GSM frequencies are 900 and 1800. So the SIM card from the A795 did not work on Cingular and the T-Mobile SIM card did.

    Makes sense?

PS: Actually the SIM card probaly did work because the RAZR is quad band 850/900/1800/1900 but because there is no 900/1800 in NA you weren't able to use the RAZR with that SIM card.

    Hopefully I didn't confuse you further.:O

And even that wasn't enough, even if you had the technology and frequency right, in some countries, they reverse the transmitting and receving frequencies....lol...

What a mess! I wish these guys would put aside some national egos and try to streamline this, but I guess it is too late for that.

Having read the above, I believe I understand. (T*Mobile = GSM, Cingular = GSM, Verizon = CDMA) please correct me if I am wrong. I will Edit this. But I now have a continuation question.

With regards to the soon to be released, and possibly already available, Nokia N80, the following specs were given:

With quad band GSM (850/900/1800/1900) and either 1900 (US) or 2100 (Europe) WCDMA radios

Does this mean that I would be able to use this phone on a Verizon network as well as T*M and CING? Or am I over reaching and reading to much into the WDMA thing?

ps. should this be a new post?

WCDMA is not related to CDMA as such for voice. WCDMA is a 3G technology that increases data transmission rates in GSM systems by using the CDMA air interface instead of TDMA.

The N80 is a a GSM only phone, so no it will not work on Verizon. I wish you were right though, that would have been some handset....:)

Thanks for clearing that up. It has taken me some time to put all the pieces togeher between all the different phones/features and network service providers and their campatibility. I am not sure why verizon isn't GSM since they are partnered w/ Vodaphone. That would be a real powerhouse especially if they did't rely on the bane of GSM, 850mhz. anyway it looks like T*mobile or Cingular is my last decesion, As I think its gonna be a N80 for me and a 6270 for my wife. (and a Nextel backup for hurricane evac comm.)

    Thanks again.

You are very welcome. I have wanted the N80 since it was first announced but I am not too keen on that sliding keyboard, I think it makes it difficult to operate with one hand (I know picky picky). The couple of other S60s that have caught my attention are the N73 and the E50, none of them have WiFi though. I just sold my 6682 and I miss it very much and I need to get back to a S60 soon. :)

I have a Norelco, too. Don't use it much (like my Gilette better), but it DOES work on VZW.

This one has been known to work on GSM, but only when run on Catnip based batteries. Even then, there is poor RF unless the furry antenna, (cleverly placed in the rear of the device), is extended. The animated screensaver, hidden in the eyes, changes in the daylight!
Retails for $45 at the Key Largo shelter! Not available in Europe.
