Cingular in WV is the worst cell phone service Ive ever seen. They Advertise no Dropped Calls thats at load of crap. How about behind a mountain Yep Dropped it. How About in the middle of town What DROPPED AGAIN!
I've experienced the same with them. But some people seem to really like them. Where about in WV were you? A coverage report would be great for us and future forum visitors....
HA HA HA is this some crazy joke (I live on the moon why doesnt cingular or any other carrier cover me LOL)
Actually Charleston, WV, where sellncell lists his location, is a pretty large city. It has 2 universities and I'm thinking 3 interstates converge there. I stayed there for a couple days about 6 months ago and Alltel's coverage was great in the region though I didn't really talk to anybody about else about how other providers do. In those mountains you really need an 800 MHz signal to provide good coverage. Cingular holds one and Alltel holds one. I guess Cingular just hasn't built out the network there or had problems in sellncells location or something?
Dobson (US Cellular) provides GSM service in WV. Cingular has an agreement to use their network. US Celular provides the CDMA service - Verizon and Alltell use their network. Nextel has its own network, but i don't think it's complete in the southern part of the state. US Cellular has invested more in its network than Dobson and it shows in the coverage. US Cell has more cell sites in better locations in the north, and the same is probably true in the southern part of the state. Here's a rather dreary coverage map. It looks like the interstates between the major towns are supposed to be covered, but that's about it: http://www.gsmworld.com/cgi-bin/ni_map.pl?cc=us&net=kc
Are you sure you're not thinking about another Charleston? At the very least I think you're thinking about another part of West Virginia. US Cellular nor Dobson have a license for that area according to the Wireless Advisor lookup. Cingular holds the only GSM license but I guess it's possible they could contract it out. As far as Alltel goes I know they are native in Charleston. I was on SID 126 which is an Alltel SID for that area. Alltel shows it in their corporate map and will sell service there. Alltel covers a large portion of the western part of the state and does free roam on USCC for the Eastern half. But Alltel has a very well built network in the areas they do cover in the state. I'm thinking you're thinking about the other side of the state.
I use to work for Alltel now I work for a little company called ntelos. My point is that my friends think gsm is awsome. So I said lets go to morgantown All Wait Cingular lost there contract with cellone. Man that Sucks! In Wv there is no dout that cdma coverage is sweet right now. Now dont get me wrong but gsm once it built up it will sweet. But Wv has alot of places that just have a 7-11 and thats it out in the middle of BFN
Plus sorry I still carry the motorola bag phone. Because I go in the middle of the woods to go ridin And i live right in the middle of charleston
http://onlinecare.cingular.com/coverageviewer/ Looks like outside of Charleston, Cingular users partners to provide coverage in WV...
You're right UFO and Joe. WV is more of a hodge-podge than I realized. There's a pretty good round-up of the licenses in the state at the link below. Some of them have changed hands a few times, and I think some InTelos holdings aren't included because they may be too recent. http://72.14.209.104/search?q=cache...est+virginia+license&hl=en&gl=us&ct=clnk&cd=5
i have looked at the coverage at the coverage for most of the major providers and the one thing i noticed was that WV coverage was not very good at all
All of the Cingular coverage is the old ATT Wireless stuff that runs basically from the state line (starting in Olive Hill , KY) on 1-64 to Charleston and it was all 1900 . I do believe some 850 has been added since the merger though .
