Interesting...I wonder if VZW wasn't at all interested in those assets.

It's not all divesting, it's a swap in some markets, so VZW may not have the License Cingular wants.

Cingular and Alltel also agreed to swap some partnership interests, with Cingular receiving interests in markets including Wichita, Kansas, and Kansas City, Missouri.

Verizon does not have much to give right now.
unless it is 10 MHz in New York maybe
We will see if Alltel will give VZW the rural market in Connecticut someday. It will be a high roaming martket for Alltel since they have no network anywhere in the northeast That is why they sold the rest of Northeast to Verizon back in 2000. So I would think they might do the same in about a year. The other markets I don't think they will sell to Verizon unless Verizon gives Alltel a mega deal.

Alltel must start operating AT&T divested markets by......Feb 21st if I am correct :dunno:
It is 120 days after the close of the AT&T Cingular deal.

Oklahoma City.... You better believe Verizon is :browani:
AT&T/Cingular was probably not intrested in giving those markets to Verizon anyway.

That's what I thought since they are going to be competing head by head(or whatever the expression is, lol).

I guess by reading the article it's up to the FCC to approve it 1st, so if they drag there feet then Cingular would be fine, since an agreement has been reached prior to the 120 day's.
And I am suprised T-Mobile didn't want any of the area's vs a CDMA carrier, Unless Cingular & T-Mobile have something else in the works besides the JV sales.

Most of this deal was Cellular so T-Mobile would not want that. The divested PCS in Texas may want.

It looks like ALLTEL is getting ALL areas being divested, including OKC:

"Alltell will purchase radio wave spectrum and network assets in Oklahoma City and Grant, Okla.; Sherman-Denison and Jack, Texas; Owensboro and Fulton, Ky.; Litchfield, Conn.; Yalobusha, Miss.; Wichita, Kan.; and several counties in Georgia and Texas." source: http://www.thestreet.com/_yahoo/tech/telecom/10196213.html?cm_ven=YAHOO&cm_cat=FREE&cm_ite=NA

What I'm curious about is why the heck ALLTEL would want Litchfield County -- ALLTEL has had nothing whatsoever in the Northeast ever since Harrisburg PA went to VZW. My guess is that it was a package deal and ALLTEL will turn right around and sell Litchfield County and other areas that don't fit well with their network...

    Speculation:

    - OKC: stays with ALLTEL
    - Texas: stays with ALLTEL
    - Owensboro/Fulton KY: gets sold to Bluegrass Cellular, Cellular South, First Cellular Southern IL, or SPCS -- rather poor fit for ALLTEL
    - Litchfield Co. CT: gets sold to VZW or Dobson -- extremely poor fit for ALLTEL
    - Mississippi: stays with ALLTEL
    - Wichita: stays with ALLTEL
    - Georgia: I'll have to look at the AWS/Cingular MO&O again to figure out what counties are involved -- but I suspect that if they are counties where ALLTEL has 850 or has ILEC business, they'll probably keep them

These are the counties in Georgia where Cingular was ordered to divest spectrum:

    Murray, GA CMA371 CEA520
    Whitfield, GA CMA371 CEA520
    Floyd, GA CMA373 CEA520
    Polk, GA CMA373 CEA520

ALLTEL has no 850 in any of these counties, all of which are in northwest GA, well away from any other ALLTEL coverage...VZW is A and Cingular is B.

ALLTEL is the ILEC in Whitfield and Murray counties (Dalton/Chatsworth area) *and* has 10 MHz of 1900 spectrum (sitting basically idle...there is a license-save CDMA site somewhere in downtown Dalton but ALLTEL's not selling service) in this area -- I expect the acquired licenses, if not ALLTEL's existing license too, to to go to VZW, if only because these two counties are a hole in VZW's 1900 holdings in north GA/east TN.

ALLTEL has no ILEC business in Floyd (Rome) or Polk (Cedartown) counties; these are almost certain to land up in VZW's hands.

Further, without Gordon County (Calhoun area...between Dalton and Rome) the licenses Cingular divested are rather useless to someone, such as ALLTEL, who doesn't already have spectrum in Gordon County.

I also noticed in the Cingular/AWS MO&O that there is some spectrum in the Knoxville, TN area that hasn't been spoken for yet. I wonder who's going to land up with that -- hopefully it'll be VZW:

    Anderson, TN CMA079 CEA147
    Blount, TN CMA079 CEA147
    Knox, TN CMA079 CEA147
    Union, TN CMA079 CEA147
    Campbell, TN CMA645 CEA147
    Cumberland, TN CMA645 CEA341
    Han****, TN CMA645 CEA147
    Morgan, TN CMA645 CEA147
    Roane, TN CMA645 CEA147
    Scott, TN CMA645 CEA147
    ****e, TN CMA646 CEA147
    Grainger, TN CMA646 CEA147
    Hamblen, TN CMA646 CEA147
    Jefferson, TN CMA646 CEA147
    Sevier, TN CMA646 CEA147
    Loudon, TN CMA649 CEA147

I'm sure VZW *really* wants this spectrum for EV-DO...
