I was wondering could I use the Nokia 6340i on a Cingular Nationwide GSM Family Plan. I know this is a AMPS/TDMA/GSM Phone all in one. I was wondering if the Cingular people could set it to GSM only for a GSM plan.

The plan is going to be -->

    Phone 1: Samsung X427M
Phone 2: Nokia 6340i (if possible)

    39.99 + 1 add. line ($19.99) = 59.99

    450 Anytime Mins
    5,000 N.W Mins
    Unlimited Mobile to Mobile Mins
    Unlimited Nationwide Roaming
    Nationwide Longdistance Included

No, Cingular can't set it to GSM only nor are you suppose to use a GAIT phone on a GSM plan. I'm not sure why you would want to use a 6340i even if all you plan on using is GSM. That's a old phone. Cingular has a good selection of GSM only phones that are much better then that phone.

I also suggest that you just get the $59.99 plan with a add a line. On that plan its only $9.99 a month for each additonal line. For only $10 extra a month you would be getting a lot more.

    $59.99 + 1 add. line ($9.99) = $69.98

    850 Anytime Minutes
    Unlimited N&W Minutes
    Unlimited Mobile to Mobile Minutes
    No Roaming, LD included

Does the 6340i have good RF or bad RF?

Why shouldn't I get it, I like the older phones they are bigger and easier for me to handle.

Is their software bugs or anything with the 6340i?

Well the Nokia 6340i did have some issues. I honestly never cared for that phone. If you want a larger bar phone try the Nokia 6010. It's a GSM only phone but has a good size and weight to it. You can also get it for cheap or even free with a contract.

The 6340i has good RF, I like the phone (have 2) but I am in the same situation. It is time for me to switch from the GAIT plan to a GSM plan and I have received both responses from Cingular: No, you must get a GSM phone only and Yes, we can give you a GSM only SIM. The majority sampling from C/S is NO and 1 yes. Cingular no longer sells this phone and it seems no longer possible to place a GSM only SIM and make these phones work, as it once was. Technically it is possible, but I feel than Cingular wants to phone to go away.

Also, the 6340i has no GPRS for data services, which will be a problem.

Bug Cingular and see what they say, let us know, but I would opt for a newer GSM phone at this point. The GAIT plans are no longer offered

I still have two 6340i's and I was planning to keep them as standby phones. I switched to GSM only plans long ago, but I had assumed these phones would still work. Both my 6340i's are unlocked, if that makes a difference. I was able to stick in a T-Mobile SIM and they used to work fine on that GSM only network. I do not see how Cingular would be any different.

I was able to do this also with Cingular and Tmobile a few year back. But I noticed this year that the GAIT phone will no longer accept a Tmobile or Cingular GSM SIM.

Have you tried it very recently?

Cingular changed their policy on Oct 19 to allow GAIT phones on their current GSM plans. They should now be able to activate the TDMA, as well as the GSM, no extra charges or hassle.

I'm not sure what it is you mean. I can switch to a new GSM plan and keep my GAIT phone? Or that I can put a current GSM SIM into my GAIT phone and it will work? I just tried the latter, and it doesn't. The GAIT phone only comes up in TDMA mode and it will not place a call. However, my GAIT SIM into a GSM only phone will work fine, as has always been the case.

    Mframe,

I checked with Cingular and you're correct. This is a significant change. I'm switching to the newer GSM plans and saving a bunch of money. I still need to wait for Jan if I want new phones. The best part is that I can access TDMA and GSM still.

    Thanks for the info.

P.S. Odd the way one has to call Cingular daily to find out what the lastest is!
