A hands-free mobile communications system that uses the Bluetooth short-range wireless platform was unveiled Thursday by automaker DaimlerChrysler's (NYSE: DCX) Chrysler Group, which also announced partnerships with some of the biggest names in wireless technology as part of its telematics strategy. The in-car system, which evolved from Mercedes-Benz's Tele Aid telematics, features voice recognition technology that DaimlerChrysler said is the industry's first to work with a driver's own mobile phone and to provide connections both inside and outside the vehicle. Use Your Own Phone, Carrier "That's the biggest advantage -- the customer can use their own phone, and can pay just for their cell phone service or add on the services they want," Chrysler Group spokesperson David Barnas told Wireless NewsFactor. While Chrysler has not released the system's cost or market potential, Barnas said the company sells some 2.5 million vehicles a year.
