Ok, it seems that Cingular has made an update for its coverage maps and especilay the 3G. A week ago the map for 3G in my area was alcking but now it sems that is to have gwond 3 times what it was. Check your coverage here: http://www.cingular.com/coverageviewer/
Well for me it got much larger but still a few miles away from my home may be soon and it will give me a reason to get a 3G phone to try out (as a second unit to the BB).
3G is cool. I would not consider any phone now that did not have 3G. I may play with other phones from time to time, but my regular phone now is my 3G Motorola A845. -Jay
Wirelessly posted (Walkguru's: LG-CU500 Obigo/WAP2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 UP.Link/6.3.0.0.0) We can only dream of 3g here.
I have it slowly creaping up on me, it shows 2 blocks away on the east of me, 3 blocks on the South & North and nothing on the West of me. I bet if I tried it, I would have 3G at my home but I have no intention of migrating over to try it, so I have to find someone with a 3G phone to test it for me.
I live in NOVA and yea, no coverage change up here... My phone is 3G capable but i've disabled it... the coverage is horrible. Fringe areas between towers are the worst, seems like i drop almost every call. An example is that my phone drops every call at the I-495 (Capital Beltway) and I-66W intersection... right by the Merrifield metro station. However, if I have the phone on 2G, I have full service there... I can't say that I've had any coverage issues with 2G tho... Far better coverage in the Suburbs than Verizon. Miss that company like a toothache  !!
From what I see on the map is a larger improement from a couple months ago. I also see a better part of fairfax getting more coverage. Also if you notice you will also see a lot more small blue isolated areas appearing so it is only matter of time till those get connected. Hopefully it will all be covered by the time I get to move to the N. VA area (hopefully this summer). With my luck it will go livve here by me just when I am about to move and then get there to only wait. But if i end up in Ashburn, it looks good so far.
Yeah, Cingular has dropped the ball on 3G coverage in Nassau County in Long Island. What's going on with that? This map shows that my house is jsut kinda in 3G coverage, but the rest of my town is not really in it. Get it moving Cingulat! (ATT!)
I am just east of the coverage then it moves to the Hunitngton area. But I am told that in my town some are actualy getting 3G but it is on the west side of it.
Yeah, but the CU320 is probably the worst 3G phone. My 3G Motorola A845 does not have those issues at those locations. The CU320 was so intolerable to me that I took it back to the store after a little more than one day because of the dropped calls.
This is very interesting, it does not show any 3G coverage in Racine, Kenosha, Waukesha, or Milwaukee. In reality Milwaukee & Waukesha are 100% 3G, Kenosha about 90% and Racine around 50%.
Guess they need to do more updating of their maps. Why don't you give them a call & tell them they are dropping the ball Charlyee? :browani: Then you can say let the users fill in the maps correctly for them.
Def agree with you Jay! I'm sure that my problems are most likely phone related. Problem is, I'm well away from an upgrade date... So I'm going to have to buy a phone retail cost to get it replaced. What did you get after the 320? I was thinking about a CU500 refurb...
Have you looked at Ebay? you can buy an unlocked or Cingular branded phone probably cheaper from Ebay then thru Cingular. People here have been saying decent things about the LG CU500, a Nokia or Motorola would be my choices, then a Samsung.
i have the lg cu500, in a 2 g area, and its working just fine.i just wish we had some love, err i mean 3g, :browani:
that is how my CU500 was that i just returned 3 day ago. i hated it!!!!! don't get me wrong, i liked the phone and its features, but i dropped every call, and the CV in my EDGE coverage area was almost not useable! And I never had service in places where i had with my olg 2g v3 razr. So after 3 CU500's i exchanged it for the new V3xx. I LOVE IT!!!!!!! I have not dropped 1 call or even lost service! And my CV works fine even with 1 bar of reception........ Plus the edge data is as fast as my cable internet!!!! That shocks me!!!!!!!!! I hated the CU500 with a passion!!!!, not function wise At least but reception wise and data wise, but i LOVE my V3xx to death!!!!!! it is 100000000000000 times better than my CU500 was. I am only 40 miles north of 3G service right now, so let hope it gets to my area soon!!!!! Again function wise i liked the CU500, i just couldn't handel never having service
I wouldn't count on it. I've found the 3G coverage area is a bit overestimated. So if it shows no coverage for you, trust me, there isn't any unless they recently installed it and haven't updated the map. I have tried to use 3G in areas where they claim I am at the edge or near the edge of coverage and all I get is EDGE.
That's good to know bobolito, it's actually funny because where they are showing the 3G coverage around me is near their towers that surround me. I don't have any plans to find out anytime in the near future, so I can wait.
Does Cingular not allow for 3G->2G switching in mid call? I find it surprising that it would drop calls like that... I'm in rural SC and will likely have to wait years before getting 3g I'm also disappointed that the iPhone won't have 3G
Where did you get that idea? One of the good things about UMTS is that it handsoff back to GSM in the middle of a call. However, you can't handoff up to UMTS unless you end the call.
I drive through scattered 3G coverage everyday, and the handoff from 3G is never a problem, and I never had a dropped call. I didn't particularly check for this but even it does not handoff up to 3G, it does not drop the call that was originated in the non 3G area right? I have never dropped a call while driving and we literally have patches of 3G so it is impossible to avoid switching between the two. I would love to specially "dropping the ball part", but why ruin my nice cold but sunny winter morning . That map is a work in progress, I noticed yesterday that now Kenosaha does show 3G but nothing north of that. Tonyn41 is from South Milwaukee and he has 100% 3G and has mentioned it a few times including posting the speeds. I have been on 100% 3G as soon as I enter Milwaukee county. This may be the first time a Cingular map is underestimating something :
we have spotless Cingular 2G with varying GPRS and EDGE in my area which is Reading, PA...............the closest UMTS is in Bethlehem, PA which is like 2 hours NE of here
I bought a v3xx for kicks the other day. So far, 3G is very spotty here in Los Angeles. I notice that my display goes from 3G to EDGE to GPRS quite frequently. EDGE seems to be the dominant force though. I was hoping the maps were wrong and that Cingular would already have 3G completely blanketed around here. I wonder what the hold up is right now? I was testing the content downloads. When I was on the road and I started the download in a 3G area, it would stall once I found myself in an EDGE area. I would click retry but to no avail. I would have to physically exit the Cingular Mall portal and go back into it to redownload the content. Can any Cingular employees out there tell me when we'll have 3G completely covered in the Southern Cali area? Thanks so much!

It's tri-band (850/1850/1900 MHz GSM) and dual band (850/1900 MHz UMTS) The v3xx is the first GSM phone I've owned with poorer battery life. I wonder if that has to do with the WCDMA mode enabled or because I keep messing around with my new toy? The voice coverage area is noticably larger than I experienced with my T-Mobile experiment but the call quality is a bit more robottic. I wonder if I could fix this if I messed around with the codecs? Thanks so much!
My area was upgraded to 3G at the end of November And then I saw how far Cingular, VZW, and Alltel all have to go in order to match Sprint's 3G coverage
yeah i was saying in one of the Sprint forums that almost all of the towers in like a 20 mile radius have EV-DO now...........i was looking at the maps like 2 months ago and i had EV-DO at that time about 3 miles outside of any EV-DO area but it turns out that they did a massive update on the maps recently............Sprint is upgrading really fast
I looked at Alltel and their 3G coverage is greater than Sprint in my area, so I'm impressed It's nice to know that Florida's capital is out of the dark ages when it comes to 3G for all of the carriers. I also take solace in the fact that 3G coverage is only going to get larger for all of the carriers
