I would suggest researching on Cnet's website (www.cnet.com). They usually have good reviews about different kinds of electronics. I like my Toshiba P25 series laptop. It is heavy (10 lbs), so unless you want it to be light, then this isn't the best one. But I like the 17" screen and built in wireless network adapter.
That will get a "value" laptop from dell with all the basics. My boss likes the super-light Toshibas that cost $3000 or so.
If you want something really small, cheap (kinda) and light, check ebay for a Toshiba Libretto L5, it has built-in wi-fi and some other pretty cool stuff. I think they run about $1200 plus shipping.
I bought a Libretto L1 off of ebay before and I had no problems. The same guy is selling the L5 I was talking about.
ok and ebay might be a good route to go or maybe something like http://www.powernotebooks.com/category.php?catId=27 refurbished laptops could save you some cash I would look for a good warranty though
No problem if you feel adventurous you could try a site like http://eurocom.com/ It looks like they have upgradeable laptops and the look to be within your price range
