Thank You for clarifying this in greater detail. I'm not exactly sure if forcing REV4 may give better voice quality because there necessarily is less traffic on it. REV 4 still uses the same channels that a REV6 phone may use. When I force my phone from REV 6 to REV 4 my default channel goes from 384 to 507. My phone does, sometimes, use channel 507 in REV 6 as well, but only when there is a lot of traffic on my default channel, 384, so my guess as to why REV 4 may get better voice quality in some areas is because it defaults the phone to a channel that not many phones default to in 1x mode, but who am I...I'm not an engineer/ cell site technician.
That is very, very interesting. If you don't mind, would you be able to go into field test mode and see if the cell site/sector your phone idles on in REV 4 and REV 6 changes in the same location when you change it from REV 6 to REV4. All Verizon cell sites have been 1x for a long time- I wonder what is going on.

Thank you very much This has been a really interesting discussion, stemming from a basic question. One concern that I have is that you & I are beginning to agree too much, so should I go back to my "Cingular Rules, Verizon Stinks" slogan?
Lol, I think we did both say the exact same thing. Lol, maybe we should go back to our old slogans...wasn't that fun?
If I turn EVDO off, what will I not be able to use? Just VCast or VCast and some GetItNow features? Come to think of it, what's the difference between VCast and Get It Now? (Think I'm upgrading to the 8300 this week)
AS far as my knowledge i have my EVDO off and i can use all the get it now features that ive tried. the diffrence is that Vcast is like where your music and videos are and Get It Now is where your applications are
With EV-DO turned off, you won't be able to access any of Verizon's VCast services, but you will be able to access their GIN services, and the Mobile Web. VCast from Verizon Wireless is the nation's first wireless broadband multimedia service for consumers that brings high quality video, 3D games, and music straight to their VCast capable handsets. Get It Now is a technology and service that allows you to download and use applications on your VZW GIN enabled phone. Through GIN you can download ringtones, games, emails, directions, IM, and more to your phone, and use them on your handset.
Andy, if "all" of Verizon's cell sites are now using 1X, how come while my phone is set at P_REV 4, am I unable to use any of Verizon's GIN applications that I other wise can access while set at P_REV 6? Here is what I found while making a test call using my LG 9900 in the Test Field menu: MOB_P_REV 6 : RX Power = 100, Chan = 425 MOB_P_REV 4 : RX Power = 92, Chan = 507
While making the test call in both modes, see what the Active Pilots/PN offsets are. All Verizon cell sites have 1x capabilities, but they are also backwards compatible with IS-95, so that is why you can force your phone down to REV 4 and it will work. The reason Data does not work while on REV 4 is simply because IS-95 technology does not allow it.
Well, I officially went with the 8300. Thanks to those who helped me figure out the extended network trick. The only thing I am a little bummed about is the fact that the "Low Beeps" sound (that I use fot texts) is super loud, even louder than the one called "Loud Beeps". It scares the ____ out of me. I also got a free month of VCast so I can use Navigator and the new ESPN MVP apps but not in my home area - no EVDO; plus I am on Extended Network. But when I go into PA or near Cleveland I will check them out again.
How does my Navigator work if I have no EVDO service? I was using it this afternoon and all I had were 2 bars of 1x...
Only a 1X signal is required in order to run Verizon's VZ Navigator. EV-DO is one telecommunications standard for wireless transmission of data through radio signals, typically for "Broadband Internet Access". Evolution-Data Optimized - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
I see. ESPN MVP must be the same way because I was showing it to a friend yesterday as well and we have no EVDO service in this area.
I am glad you are happy with the 8300. What EV-DO does is give you much faster data transmission rate than 1X. For all practical purposess, If there is no EV-DO in the area, what you will not be able to use is streaming of video clips and music. Navigator, ESPN etc. will all work in 1x. Supposedly if you start a clip in an EV-DO area then leave that area, it will fall back to the slower 1x and continue playing the clip. Hope this helps
I'll tell you what, I haven't gotten a chance to totally check out VCast yet, but the Nav is cool and that ESPN thing is as well...However, not sure I'd pay an extra ten and fifteen bucks a month for either. Also, the lady at the store is going to call me two days before my trial is over to let me know. How sweet is that? EDIT: When I talk on Extended Network, the call timer says Roam: 00:10 (or whatever the time of the call is). Am I still okay there?
