Ok, after a few weeks/months of messing around, it's now time to pull the covers off and announce Cellumap for BlackBerry is now released with version 1.00 !! ...and supporting CDMA/IDEN/GSM/UMTS!! For full info visit: Cellumap Cellular Coverage Maps If you have a short attention span and just want to get the app installed immediately Over-the-Air, point your BlackBerry browser to: cellumap.com/ota (<--link won't work on a desktop, only BB browser.) What is Cellumap you ask? Well, you should already know! ...but Ok, for those who don't I'll tell you anyway ----> you run the app on your phone, press the "Send Data" button, and then your point is immediately visable on the Cellumap map (ok, Google Map actually, with Cellumap overlay ) Showing your phones signal strength (and other geeky cellular info) Here's a screenshot of the Beta app running on a BlackBerry 9700: ...then you press the "Send Data" button (make sure you have a GPS lock and HTTP connection)... ...and voila, your point is visable in the Cellumap (ok, Google) map: There. Wasn't that fun and easy? Now go forth and spread the good news to the BlackBerry peoples of the world! atriot: ...oh, and don't forget there is also a Cellumap app for Symbian, altho the installation process is a headache due to Symbian's ****ed up signing process. Anyway, the BlackBerry app is much nicer, so if you have a Symbian phone, I suggest to trade it up to a BB :-D ____________________________ AND SPECIAL THANKS TO ALL THE WA FORUMITES WHO HELPED WITH THE BETA TESTING!!! Not only was it an invaluable help in the app development (especially on the CDMA side) but it was a great opportunity to get to know some of you a little better as well. Salute! Double cheers!
Okay, I installed it. What is it supposed to do again? I have a Storm 2. I get a screen that is half filled with the Keyboard that I can't get rid of. When I click on "Send Data," and press "Yes," I get a "! Data Sent" message. When I press "Ok," nothing has changed -- the screen looks the same as when I started. This is kind of boring.
Right. That's all that happens on the phone. Now go to Cellumap Cellular Coverage Maps and type your zip code in the search-box in the map, and select "Verizon-Wireless" from the network drop-box, and "CDMA" from the drop-box next to it, and then press the "Signal Strength" button, and you should see the points on the map where you pressed the "Send Data" button. PS- I made a small tutorial on how to view points in the map: http://www.cellumap.com/map-tutorial.html .
Great Have fun with it. Go map out your neighborhood (..just don't use it while driving!!) ....sorry if it's a little complicated/confusing to understand at first :O I'm an engineer, not a sales/marketing guy
Thanks. I just finished the BB version, I thought I'd sit back and revel in that for a little while before starting the Android version ...but on the other hand, I'll get bored in a day or two, and the T-Mobile G1 I have sitting on my desk will start looking at me with sad eyes, and I'll probably have an Android version out sooner than I thought (ie: maybe a few weeks/months)
Come on, it's not that classified, we were talking about it last week when I said "it would be really cool if you make it do ..................". :browani:
Lol. I don't really want a Blackberry. Do you have detailed instructions available for how to install it on Symbian? For non-technical people, I mean? I take it I'd have to get a certificate signing key? (I think that's what it's called.)
For the Symbian app, you need to install 3 seperate .SIS files via your Desktop Manager (ex: OVI). The first SIS file doesn't need to be signed, but the next 2 do. You can sign them yourself at SymbianSigned. It's not that bad, if you follow the directions closely, it should take you maybe 5-10 minutes to get everything signed and downloaded. But plan on more like 10-20 minutes because nothing ever goes smoothly the first time ;-) ...oh, and yea, I made a detailed explanation how to do all that (and to download the SIS files) here
I love this program, but you knew that already. Questions for you - at what dbm does the color chang to yellow and red. I am presuming it is different for CDMA and GSM since the max on the CDMA is -80 and on GSM it is -70. Thanks Much
Oh, right, thanks for reminding me, I was meaning to post the color chart somewhere but forgot about it. The color chart is generic for all technologies. Really, CDMA and UMTS can be OK with slightly weaker signal (maybe 5-10 dB less than GSM or iDen), because of CDMA's design (soft-handover, spread spectrum, etc.) Anyway, here's a chart until I can remember to post one on the website... (-dBm's) 59 < ... Very Dark Green - Very Excellent Signal 60 to 69 ... Dark Green - Excellent Signal 70 to79 ... Green - Very Good Signal 80 to 89 ... Light Green - Good Signal 90 to 99 ... Yellow - Weak Signal 100 to 109 ... Red - Marginal Signal 110 to 119 ... Dark Red - Almost no signal 120 > ... Grey - Shouldn't be any signal
I was going to say "it looks doable" but I forgot you have to have GPS. I only have it on my netbook. lol. Thanks for the link though - wish I could try it out!
. Update 18.March: ***Please upgrade to Version 1.02**** . Fixes were made to the GSM/UMTS part. Previous versions sometimes displayed "UMTS" when in GSM when wifi was turned on. This is now corrected in the app and on the database. No changes made to CDMA or IDEN.
I am really enjoying this program as are 7 of our friends that are tracking our trip in Jordan. I recommend it highly and encourage everyone to try it. BlackBerry9700/5.0.0.405 Profile/MIDP-2.1 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/102
